Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a small, lively dog that is a member of the Bichon family. Originating in Cuba, it was initially bred primarily as a companion for the wealthy and is a national symbol of Cuba. Known for its friendly and intelligent disposition, the Havanese is an excellent family pet. It is eager to socialize and gets along quite well with children, strangers, and other pets.
The Havanese coat is quite unique. It's a single coat, with a thick, downy undercoat and a medium, fluffy topcoat. It is often described as "silky soft", and can range in color from dark to light, including chocolate, white, cream, champagne, and black. This breed sheds very little, making it ideal for those with allergies. Grooming should be done regularly, since this breed doesn't have a lot of oil on its skin. Daily brushing is recommended, as well as monthly trims and occasional bathing.
Havaneses have dietary needs that are similar to other breeds of similar size. However, there are some important differences that dog owners should be aware of. As with all breeds, diet should be chosen based on age, activity level, health of the Havaneses and any individual needs. Feeding once per day, preferably in the evening, is preferred. Since Havaneses are a medium-sized breed, the diet should include a combination of wet and dry foods and should contain all the necessary nutrients.
Becoming the best puppy parent for a Havanese takes patience, dedication, and consistency. The most important step is to socialize your pup right away in safe environments. Havanese pups need to be exposed to other dogs, people, and environments in order to prevent potential phobias. Additionally, it is important to provide your Havanese with plenty of physical exercise and mental stimulation. Take your pup for walks, play fetch, or let them run around in a secure and safe outdoor area. Finally, make sure to stick to a consistent routine of feeding and potty breaks.
The size of an adult Havanese will depend largely on their diet, the amount of exercise they get, and the genes they are born with. Generally, a healthy Havanese puppy can grow to be between 8 inches and 11 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh anywhere from 7 to 13 pounds. It's worth noting, however, that smaller and larger sized Havanese are both accepted by the breed standards. With proper care, a Havanese puppy can live 15 years or more with many of them living into their late teens.
The amount of time you should walk your Havanese each day is dependent upon the age and health of your furry friend. Generally, a healthy adult Havanese should get at least 20 minutes of walking exercise twice a day. If you have a young pup, you may want to gradually increase his daily walk duration over time. You should also look for other outlets of exercise, such as playing fetch and engaging in puzzle toys or activities. It is important to factor in the age, health, and activity level of your pup when deciding how many minutes per day to walk your Havanese.
Havaneses are indeed a great option for first-time pet owners! They have outgoing personalities that make them friendly and funny; Havaneses love to snuggle and be the center of attention. With moderate exercise and plenty of mental stimulation, a Havaneses' mischievous and curious nature is channeled in the right direction. Training is often a breeze due to their intelligence. Plus, they are considered to be one of the smallest breeds of dog, as they typically weigh under twenty pounds, making them an ideal size for their first-time owner.
Training your Havanese requires patience, consistency, and lots of positive reinforcement. Start by teaching basic commands like "sit" and "come"--the goal should be to teach your pup calm, impeded behavior where they don't feel the need to bark or misbehave. To ensure successful training, use treats and gesture-based commands in a calm, clear environment, and make sure to be consistent and reward your pup when they obey. Start by making training sessions short and repeat them to master the commands. Always remember to be positive with lots of love and encouragement.
