Questions & Answers
Havanese are a small breed of dog that originated in the country of Cuba. They are friendly and intelligent, making them great companions for just about any household. They get along great with both people and other animals, making them great addition to families with children or other pets. They are quite active, and need plenty of exercises to stay healthy and in top shape. They also need regular grooming and daily brushing to make sure their fur stays in good condition. With proper training and care, they can become lovable and loyal companions that are a pleasure to have around.
The Havanese coat is known for being a long and lustrous double-layer coat that comes in many colors, including white, black, tan, silver, gold, and brown. The top layer of the coat is typically a bit wavy and the inner layer is silky and soft, allowing for a great deal of fluffiness. The length of the coat depends on the individual Havanese, but it usually tends to reach up to two-thirds down the length of the body.
Havaneses enjoy a variety of foods, including those that are homemade as well as commercial products. A dietary staple is usually fresh, high-quality meats and fish, generally served cooked or as part of a salad. Other popular foods include fruit, vegetables, grains, nuts, and dairy products. Various herbs, spices, and seasonings are also used to enhance the flavor of food. Much of the diet consists of human-grade grocery store products specified for these small dogs and high-quality kibble and canned food, with the occasional homemade treat such as boiled chicken or scrambled eggs.
Before getting a Havanese, it's important to make sure you have a few essentials prepared and ready. Ideally, you should have a collar, leash and a bed, as well as a brush and metal comb for brushing out its coat. Having toys and treats on hand is a must, as well as a playpen or fence in which you can safely contain your new pet. The most important thing you can do is puppy-proof your home, making sure potentially harmful objects are out of reach and any fragile items that can be broken or chew-able are securely stored.
While the Havaneses breed is a toy breed, they are often mistaken as being a bigger breed likely due to their thick coat and size. Depending on the individual dog, they can be anywhere between 6-13lbs and 8-11.5 inches tall. Therefore, while they are not considered to be a large breed, their size can be larger than some other toy breeds. Additionally, their reputation as pets is as friendly, smart and trainable dogs, which can make them seem bigger than they really are.
It is possible to take your Havanese running; however, it is important to consider a few factors first. Age, health, and existing activity levels are all important things to consider, as excessive activity or strain could be detrimental to an older, unhealthy, or inactive Havanese. If your dog is healthy and able to handle the activity, it is beneficial to increase running activity gradually, as the Havanese is naturally a more low-intensity breed and will need to acclimate to the increased demands of running for an extended period of time.
Havaneses are known to be loving and loyal family dogs, making them ideal companions. Not only are they intelligent and easy to train, but they also get along well with children and have a playful disposition. They are also easy to groom, though their thick, soft coats will need regular brushing and trimming. The Havaneses' small size makes them easy to handle, and they tend to be low-shedippers so they're a great choice for those with allergies.
The amount of time needed for a daily training routine for Havaneses varies depending on the individual dog's age and experience level. While puppies and young dogs may require more frequent practice, adult Havaneses may only need short, frequent training sessions. Generally speaking, Havaneses should get at least 10-15 minutes of training at least twice a day, with consideration for level of intensity. If your Havaneses is struggling with a certain trick or command, you can extend the training duration for additional practice.
