Questions & Answers
Havaneses have a long history of being favored by Cuban and American aristocracy. They were the first small Havana breed recognized by the Cuban Kennel Club in 1887 and in 1964, the American Kennel Club officially recognized them. Havaneses make wonderful companions due to their intelligence, sociability, adaptability, and affection, and they are often referred to as the "Havana Silk Dog". They are fun and alert, with an abundance of energy and if properly exercised, they will eventually settle down for a good nap in your lap.
Managing allergies with Havaneses requires a great deal of care and attention. To start, make sure to carefully brush their coat regularly and bathe them as needed, as pollen, dust and other allergens can become trapped in the fur. Vacuum regularly to remove any dust or pet hair in the home, and wash bedding to rid it of any allergens. Keep your pet away from triggers, such as smoke, strong scents, and other animals that may bring on an allergy attack.
Finding the best food for your Havaneses is important for their health, longevity, and general wellbeing. Since Havaneses are considered a brachycephalic (short-nosed) breed, traditionally, they are prone to having breathing trouble and experiencing dental issues throughout their lifetime. With this in mind, when selecting a food for your Havaneses, you should look for food specially formulated for brachycephalic breeds. These foods might contain ingredients and nutrients that can assist in reducing health-risks associated with the Havaneses breed.
Before bringing your new Havanese home, there are a few steps you can take to ensure your home is properly prepared. Make sure the floors of your home are cleaned, vacuumed, and free of any debris or small objects that the pup could choke on. Ensure there are no electrical cords in easy reach as puppies are known for chewing on them. Look for any wall hangings or low furniture you need to move out of reach, as a pup can easily knock them down. Stock up on dog supplies such as dog food, toys, and bedding.
Havaneses are not considered a "big dog." While they are larger than "toy" breeds, they are still a smaller breed. They usually reach a maximum height of around 9-10 inches, and weigh no more than 7-9 pounds. Although, technically, small dog breeds are categorized as any breed that weighs less than 22 lbs, Havaneses lack the stature of more popular, larger breeds like Labrador Retrievers or German Shepherds.
Absolutely. Taking your Havanese running can be a great way to get your pup the exercise it needs. However, because the Havanese is a small and delicate breed, it is important to consider its individual characteristics and health before using running as an exercise option. Start slowly and make sure your Havanese is comfortably walking long distances and running gradually. Ensure you carry proper supplies, such as fresh water and a towel to dry any wet fur, and make sure you know the signs of fatigue so you can take breaks if necessary.
Generally speaking, Havaneses are known to be very good with other animals, including pets. They tend to have an easy-going nature, so they can usually get along with cats, dogs, or other small animals pretty well. They are also quite playful, which can make them great companions for other animals. Like any pet, it's important to introduce them gradually and provide a safe and secure environment when introducing them to other pets. However, with proper acclimation, they can usually become great pals with their furry counterparts.
Yes, Havaneses are incredibly intelligent. While some breeds can be more favored for having higher adaptability, like being able to understand commands faster, Havaneses are known for their natural problem-solving abilities. They're experts at figuring out ways to get attention and they do so in a very unique way. On top of that, Havaneses possess a level of cleverness that surpasses that of other breeds. While their intelligence has been measured to be lower than more traditional working breeds, Havaneses still show a considerable amount of intelligence.
