Questions & Answers
Havaneses are delightful and engaging toy dogs that are often referred to as 'Velcro dogs' because of their strong attachment to their owners. They are devoted and affectionate and make wonderful companions. They really enjoy human contact and will often follow their owners around the house. The Havaneses are a lively breed with a curious and playful nature, but they are also quite good-natured and obedient. They require minimal exercise and are quite content to stay inside with their owners. They are also intelligent and gentle.
The Havanese coat is luxuriously soft and silky, with a texture similar to that of cashmere. It comes in a variety of color combinations such as solid, bi-color, sable, tri-color, and particolor. They usually have little, or no, shedding, but the length of the coat depends on how owners care for it. Some owners may prefer to keep it short and trimmed, while others opt for longer cuts. The length of the coat can range anywhere from long enough to reach the ground to just a few inches long.
Havaneses are small-breed dogs and can have sensitive stomachs and thus it's important to feed them only the necessary food for their size and breed. Foods to avoid include grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, chocolate, macadamia nuts, and any food with a high sugar or fat content. Foods with a potential for mold, such as nuts and legumes, should also be avoided. Feeding Havaneses table scraps can also cause problems as these foods can be high in fat or sugar and may contain unknown substances that could cause a problem.
Before getting a Havanese, you will need to make sure you have a few essential items. Some basics to purchase include food and water bowls, toys, a leash and collar with ID tags, a crate or bed (or both depending on their size) to provide a space where your dog feels safe and secure, a brush and shampoo to keep their coat looking nice, and nutritious food to provide them with a balanced diet. Additionally, you will need to have some form of audio training and obedience classes, as Havanese are high energy and will need stimulation.
The Havaneses breed is known for being small, usually weighing in from 7-13 pounds with a height of roughly eight to eleven inches. Despite their small size, Havaneses dogs are surprisingly sturdy with thick, wavy fur and bright, expressive eyes. They are lovers at heart, friendly to family and guests alike and have a wide range of personalities. In addition, these long-bodied pups are always up for an adventure and require minimal exercise for their size. All things considered, it's no surprise that Havaneses are considered small dogs.
Yes, Havaneses are active dogs. Although they are small-sized animals, they possess a surprisingly adventurous spirit. They are very playful and enjoy participating in various activities, including running, jumping, and playing games with their owners. They will happily run around in the backyard for hours or take long, leisurely walks with you. With their alert and spirited nature, Havaneses are great jogging or hiking companions. They are also good swimmers and can often be seen frolicking in the waves or a favorite swimming pool.
Havaneses make fantastic companions for first-time owners because of their easily adaptable nature. Their intelligence makes them capable of learning simple commands quickly, so training should not be a major issue for beginner pet owners. Furthermore, Havaneses do not require too much exercise, but they do need walks to stay active and healthy. This means they are perfect for owners with limited space or an active lifestyle. Lastly, these breeds are very affectionate and can become great additions to the family without too much trouble.
Training a Havanese is a rewarding experience that requires consistency and patience on your part. Start out by having your Havanese on a daily schedule for feeding, potty breaks and playtime. A consistent schedule helps your pup understand what is expected of it. As with all breeds, positive reinforcement is the key to successful training. Use treats and praise to reward your Havanese when it does something right. Begin with easy commands such as sit and stay. Move onto more complex commands as your pup learns these basic instructions.
