Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a friendly and lovable breed of toy dogs, originating from Cuba. They are very social creatures, often known as the world’s first social dog. Interestingly, they are one of the oldest toy dog breeds, believed to have descended from other breeds including the Bichon, Poodle, and smaller terriers. A Havaneses’ coat is thick and long and can come in various colors, such as white, beige, black, and a combination of all three.
Absolutely! Havaneses have exceptional low-shedding coats, which is one of the reasons why they are such a great breed for potential owners who may have allergies. Regular grooming and brushing is still required, however, you won't have to worry about cleaning up fur and dander around the house with this breed. In addition, this breed will not typically end up with mats and tangles in the fur either, which further adds to their desirability for families and individuals looking for a non-shedding breed who is relatively low maintenance.
Feeding your Havaneses the wrong food can cause them to become very ill. It's important to understand the dietary requirements of your Havaneses and be aware of foods that should be avoided. Foods that are high in fat, salt, sugar or otherwise unhealthy can be dangerous for these dogs and should not be given. Also, keep an eye out for foods that are toxic to dogs, such as chocolate, onions, garlic, macadamia nuts, and grapes.
Havanese dogs do have some unique requirements to ensure the health and well-being of the breed. They have a thick double coat, so brushing is recommended on a weekly basis to prevent matting. Furthermore, regular grooming is essential for keeping their coat healthy and free from tangles. Additionally, dental hygiene should be addressed, as the breed is prone to dental issues. Consequently, regular brushing as well as occasional dental cleaning are recommended. With regards to exercise, Havanese are an active breed that needs daily walks and occasional trips to dog parks.
As a breed, the Havanese is a toy breed of dog and is known to stay small in size. Generally, adult Havanese will weigh between seven and thirteen pounds and are between eight and 11 inches tall from shoulder to floor. As puppies, Havanese grow gradually, with most of their growth being completed by 12 months of age. While this is the generally accepted average size range, each individual dog's size may vary. However, most individuals can expect their Havanese puppy to stay in the range mentioned above and remain a toy breed throughout their life.
The amount of walking a Havanese needs will vary depending on their age, size, health, and energy levels. Generally, it is a good idea to provide your Havanese with 20 to 30 minutes of exercise per day. For younger or more active Havanese dogs, it is best to provide them with more exercise, such as up to an hour of walking or other activities. If you are able to keep them busy with games or activities they enjoy, like a stint in the park or a romp in the backyard, that can also be beneficial.
Generally speaking, Havaneses tend to get along quite well with children, as this breed is usually known for their outgoing, friendly, and loving natures. They can be easily trained, which is great for interacting with young kids. They have the intelligence to understand boundaries and to respond to commands from children appropriately. They are incredibly sociable and enjoy playing with their owners, so they can be excellent companions for the whole family, especially those with young children.
Havaneses are often referred to as “Velcro dogs” because of their loving, loyal, and attentive temperaments. They are also known for their smarts and trainability. Havaneses are capable of complex thought and can learn a wide variety of commands quite quickly. They are highly intelligent and intuitive and are skilled problem solvers. They're also quite adaptable, making it easy for them to learn new skills and thrive in various situations. Additionally, Havaneses are often referred to as “clowns” due to their fun personalities and sense of humor.
