Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a fun and affectionate medium-sized breed of dog known for their unique appearance and friendly attitude. They have a distinctly soft coat consisting of a combination of white, black, and sometimes tan and silver and they have a rounded head with long ears that hang low. Originally from the island of Cuba, Havaneses are known for being loyal and affectionate companions and typically have a high intelligence level. They are often quite active and enjoy activities such as learning new tricks, playing fetch, and going for walks and hikes.
Havaneses are indeed hypoallergenic. This is a term used to describe a breed of dog which is not likely to provoke allergic reactions in humans. These breeds are known to produce a low amount of dander, which is a common allergen. People with allergies may find it beneficial to have a Havaneses, as it the dander produced is minimal. Furthermore, since these dogs lack an undercoat, they shed less fur than other breeds. This reduces the chances of having to deal with pet-related allergies.
Havaneses have dietary needs that are similar to other small breeds. Generally speaking, Havaneses require a diet that is dense in protein, while at the same time being low in fat to help maintain their slim physique. They also require a lot of vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates to support their high energy level. Additionally, calcium is an important part of Havaneses' dietary needs to help support their strong bones and joints. Treats should also be given in moderation to ensure that they do not become overweight.
Preparing your home for your new Havanese should include the basics like getting appropriate supplies and setting up designating areas for them. Make sure to have bowls for food and water, a bed, and chews, along with several different toys to rotate for them. Additionally, create an area in your home for the Havanese to have their own personal space where they will feel safe and secure. Get your Havanese a collar and dog tags with emergency contact information, along with identification microchipping.
Havaneses come in a variety of sizes, ranging from very small Toy or Miniature sizes to larger Standard sizes. Ultimately, the size of the Havaneses is determined by the breed standards set by the American Kennel Club (AKC). The AKC's size standards indicate that Toy Havaneses should not exceed 7-pounds, Miniatures can reach up to 12-pounds, while a Standard Havaneses can be up to 20-pounds. The breed is also divided into three categories, per AKC requirements: Toy, Miniature, and Standard.
Havaneses dogs are an active breed and typically need a moderate amount of exercise each day. The amount can vary depending on the age and health of the individual dog, but generally it is important to provide your Havaneses with some sort of activity every day to keep them physically and mentally stimulated. A good rule of thumb is to aim for at least 45 minutes of exercise each day, whether it be going for a walk, playing catch, or engaging in some sort of agility training.
Generally, Havaneses do get along with other pets, though some can be more territorial and may display aggressive behavior. It's important for owners to make sure to provide their Havaneses with proper socialization, training, and boundaries when interacting with other animals. This is true even when the intentions are friendly. Havaneses can be less likely to act out or become aggressive with other animals if owners stay consistent with regard to their expectations for their pet. Within the home, it's wise to keep pets separated until familiarity and understanding of boundaries can be established, which can take time.
It's definitely been said that Havaneses are quite intelligent breeds of dog! Their natural ability to solve problems has been known to surprise both owners and non-owners alike. They're incredibly loyal, so their personality often makes them quite responsive to training, which is part of why they've earned their reputation for intelligence. Havaneses are particularly good at tracking scents, making games more enjoyable for them as they can "get" the challenge of finding hidden objects.
