Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a breed of small, intelligent, and lively dogs. They are a relative of the Bichon Frise, and their playful, clown-like attitude and tendency to bond to the people they love make them a popular companion dog. Fun facts about this curious pup include that they originated in Cuba, and are known to be able to do tricks including “stand”, “sit”, “stay” and even “dance”! Additionally, Havaneses love the spotlight and they have been used in movies and television shows.
It is impossible to guarantee that owning a Havaneses will not cause you to have allergies. Allergies are unpredictable and their origin can often be difficult to pinpoint. That being said, since Havaneses are hypoallergenic dogs, meaning they produce a minimal amount of dander, there is less of a chance you will have a reaction compared to other breeds. Additionally, Havaneses are a very low-shedding breed so they will leave less of their fur behind, further reducing the likelihood of experiencing any allergic symptoms.
Havanese, as with all dog breeds, should not be fed foods that are high in fat or sugar such as chocolate, grapes, or raisins. They also should not be fed human food, such as processed foods, as this could upset their stomach or lead to other health issues down the road. Additionally, the American Kennel Club recommends that Havanese not be given rawhide, beef bones, and pork bones, as these can splinter and harm your pup.
Before bringing home a Havanese, it's important to make sure you have the essential items needed to take care of it. That includes a few leashes, harnesses, and collars; food / water bowls; puppy food; sturdy toys; treats; grooming supplies; a comfortable pet bed; a crate to help with potty training; and a few chew toys. It's also important to ensure you have secured a reliable veterinary clinic and ordered any applicable dog tags. Making sure you have all the necessary items ahead of time, can make the transition much easier on your new pup.
Havaneses come in a variety of sizes, ranging from the small teacup size up to the large standard size. Generally speaking, Havaneses are considered to be a toy or a lapdog breed, weighing anywhere from 7 to 20 pounds and measuring between 8-11 inches in height. Havaneses are known for their hypoallergenic coats and their intelligence, meaning they are relatively easy to train. In terms of temperament, Havaneses tend to be friendly with other animals and make a great companion for a family.
Havaneses are an active breed and typically need at least 30 minutes of exercise per day. This can be anything from fun outdoor activities such as fetch or agility runs to simple walks. As with people, how much exercise a Havaneses needs is largely dependent on their age and level of activity. Puppies, for example, require a lot of exercise and stimulation to ensure proper mental and physical development. Senior dogs may need shorter walks and more rest due to decreased activity.
Havaneses are known for being gentle and affectionate companions to any family they adopt, which includes those with young children. They are great playmates and their cheerful, lively personalities make them ideal for those who want an interactive, social pet. As a result, they make excellent canine siblings for kids, getting along well with both younger and older children. On top of that, Havaneses are also highly trainable, so both the kid and dog can have a fun time together learning new skills.
Training a Havanese can be an enjoyable experience, however, it is important to bear in mind that they require ongoing training in order to be obedient and to stay well-mannered. Havanese tend to be smart, yet can be quite stubborn if not taught correctly. As a result, it is essential to ensure that you are consistent with training, while implementing positive reinforcement as the basis of your training style.
