Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a breed of dog that belong to the small breed of the Bichon type. They are typically characterized by their long, curly coat, with soft, well-balanced bodies, perky ears, and a happy disposition. Their short, flat muzzles are covered in short, silky hair, which gives them their signature “havanese look”. These small dogs are highly affectionate, making them great family companions. They get along well with children and other pets, and they thrive in stimulating environments.
Havaneses can be hypoallergenic as any breed, although there's no guarantee of it. Many breeders have made an effort to reduce the odds of their Havaneses causing allergic reactions in people by carefully selecting which dogs they will breed and using specific techniques to reduce the amount of shedding their Havaneses do. Some Havaneses produce very little dander – the substance that triggers allergic reactions in many people – due to their thick, short coats.
Havaneses are beautiful and smart breed of dogs, and as such, they require nutritionally balanced, high-quality food specifically developed for their needs. The best food option for a Havaneses would be a premium, highly digestible kibble that is rich in animal proteins. This will ensure they are receiving all the essential nutrients needed for a healthy and happy life. It's also important to consider any additional needs of individual Havaneses when finding the right food.
To prepare your home for your new Havanese, make sure you have all of the necessary supplies. Stocking up on food, toys, bedding, and treats is a must. Get a sturdy, comfortable crate in case you need to separate your pup from other pets or children. Take some time to puppy-proof your home by removing any items such as cables or small objects that you wouldn't want your pup to get their mouth on. Clear any spaces that need to be accessible for when they need to go potty outside.
Havaneses come in a variety of sizes, although the breed standard calls for an adult to stand between 9.5 and 11.5 inches tall at the shoulder. Generally, these small dogs will weigh around 7-13 pounds depending on whether they are show or pet quality. They have robust chest and rib cages, small feet, and quite a lot of feathering. Their beautiful coats come in colors such as black and white, red and white, cream, gold and black, blue and white or tricolor.
While it is possible to take your Havanese running, it may not be the best idea. The breed does require moderate exercise, but long runs or distance jogging may be too much for this smaller breed of dog. Additionally, due to the Havanese's short-legs and long body, care must be taken to ensure that running is done on soft and even terrain in order to avoid injury.
Absolutely! Havaneses make wonderful family dogs. They are extremely intelligent, loyal and affectionate, and they get along well with children and other pets. They don't require a great deal of exercise, but they do need plenty of mental stimulation, which makes them the perfect addition to an active family. Havaneses are also quite sociable and thrive on attention and human companionship, which makes them perfect for snuggling with on the couch! Thanks to their trusting nature, they quickly learn the rules of the house and will be a faithful companion for years to come.
Training your Havanese is important for helping them learn socialization and developing good behaviors. The key is to have patience and consistency in your approach, with positive reinforcement. To start, make sure that you have the appropriate training materials, such as a standard leash and collar, treats, and a crate. You should try and train your Havanese in a relatively quiet environment with as few distractions as possible. It is also important to start with commands that are simple and easy to understand, like sit, stay, or down.
