Questions & Answers
Havaneses, or Bichon Havanais, is a small breed of dog that is grouped into the Bichon family, which includes breeds like the Bichon Frise and the Coton de Tulear. They are known for their fluffy white coat, friendly and outgoing natures, and intelligence. As is with any breed, they should be given proper socialization, obedience training, exercise, and nutrition. Generally they are good with children, usually weighing around 9-11 pounds at their full adult size.
It is possible that a Havaneses could cause you to have allergies, but it is not likely. Allergies can be triggered by multiple sources, including dander, pollen, and dust mites—regardless of the breed of dog. In order to determine if you are allergic to a Havaneses, you should visit a doctor or a dermatologist for an allergy test. That being said, Havaneses are considered to be hypoallergenic and many people report few to no allergic reactions when around the breed.
When caring for a Havanese, there are certain foods that you should absolutely avoid feeding this breed. Due to their smaller size, the Havanese may be unable to eat larger sized items such as bones, rawhide, or peanut butter. Additionally, it is important to always avoid any foods with high fat content, artificial colors, additives, sugars, and by-products. Some human foods, such as grapes, can be dangerous to Havanese, and so one should always be aware of the items that are in their dog's bowl.
Preparation is key for giving your new Havanese a happy and healthy home from day one. Start by ensuring you have all the supplies you need to care for your pup – toys, food, a comfortable bed, bowls, a collar, and a leash; it's helpful to make a list prior to bringing your pup home. Additionally, consider researching and establishing a routine for potty training and establishing good behaviors. While your Havanese may not require formal obedience training, you should familiarize yourself with appropriate training techniques.
Havaneses, sometimes referred to as a Bichon Havanese, are a small breed of dog. While they range in size depending on the individual dog, they are typically considered to be a small dog breed. According to the American Kennel Club, an adult Havanese is roughly 8-11 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs 7-13 pounds. On average, they are about the same size as a small lapdog. They have a soft, silky, and long coat that comes in many colors and makes them look significantly larger than they are.
Havaneses are an active breed of toy dog, so they will need plenty of exercise to stay fit and healthy. An ideal routine would include daily walks and regular play sessions. Long walks at least twice a week are also recommended, as they help the Havaneses get sufficient mental stimulation and physical activity that keeps them in prime condition. Depending on their age, size, and physical abilities, the amount of exercise for Havaneses can vary, but they will generally need at least 60 minutes of vigorous activity every day.
Generally speaking, Havaneses do very well with kids. They are known for their sweet, gentle personalities and tend to be very playful and affectionate with children. They typically don't have any aggressive tendencies, which makes them a great pet for families with young kids. Havaneses also have a lot of patience, which makes them ideal playmates for kids. Plus, they are also quite intelligent and curious, so they can help children learn and explore the world.
Training your Havanese is an important step in raising a happy and balanced pup. The best way to start is to begin teaching basic commands, such as "sit" and "stay", so that you have a foundation of communication between the two of you. Once the pup masters those core commands, you can move on to more complex behaviors and tricks. Teaching your pup basic manners, such as not jumping on the furniture or not begging for food, will require consistency and patience.
