Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a regal, social breed that originated in Cuba in the 1800s. They are very smart and have been used for show and performance purposes. Their signature look is their bold coats, which come in many different colors and markings, including white, cream, black and parti-colored. They are also known for their signature hairdo, which is trimmed short all over its body except for near the ears and tail. They are loving and friendly companions, and require plenty of companionship and social interaction to thrive.
Havaneses, like any other pet, are not guaranteed to not cause allergies. However, due to their hypoallergenic coat and low shedding, a Havaneses is considered "allergy-friendly". It is possible that individuals may still have a reaction to the saliva or dander of a Havaneses, but studies show this is significantly less likely than with other breeds. While it is always recommended to take allergy tests before bringing any pet into the home, Havaneses may be a safer option for those worried about allergies.
It is generally recommended that Havaneses be fed a dry dog food that is specifically designed for small-breed dogs. Small-breed food typically offers a higher calorie and nutrient density than regular dry dog food, allowing small breeds to reach their recommended caloric and nutrient needs more easily. When picking a Havaneses-friendly brand of food, consider making sure it's naturally formulated to meet all of the dietary needs for this breed, including sufficient levels of glucosamine and other joint-protecting amino acids to promote healthy joints and cartilage.
Before getting a Havanese, you should be sure to stock up on some essential items. A good quality, durable collar, leash, and harness are musts, and be sure to get the right size for your pup. If you're planning to crate train, you'll need a comfortable crate large enough for your Havanese, as well as a variety of safe, chew-proof toys and chews. You should also have plenty of nutritious dog food on hand, as well as treats for rewarding good behavior.
The Havaneses is recognized as a small breed of dog, usually weighing no more than 7 pounds and measuring under 11 inches tall. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that a Havaneses is considered a 'big dog' or that its size suggests anything about its personality or temperament. Rather, Havaneses have been bred to be companion animals that are loyal, gentle and affectionate, and have proven to be an excellent choice for families with young children.
As a high-energy breed, Havaneses require more exercise than some other breeds of dogs. Generally, these dogs need at least an hour of physical activity daily. This should include time spent running, playing, and engaging in other activities that help them stay fit. If Havaneses are not given adequate exercise, it can lead to behavioral issues such as destructive chewing and excessive barking. Additionally, a lack of exercise can easily lead to weight gain and health issues, which can diminish your pup's quality of life.
Havaneses are known to be a loyal and friendly breed, so they typically do great with kids. They love people and can become good companions for children. Most Havaneses are fairly patient and gentle and enjoy being interactive, which is especially important for families with kids. It's important to consider, however, that there is some risk with any type of pet when they are around kids. So it's best for owners to properly supervise and train their Havaneses to avoid any unwanted behavior.
Generally speaking, Havaneses are considered to be intelligent dogs. They are quick learners and take instruction well. They are also very good problem solvers and can often 'figure out' difficult problems with relative ease. Havaneses are well known for their comedic sense and can often display a wide range of expressions that hint at their intelligence. Even so, they are also incredibly loyal and often bond strongly with their owners, demonstrating their understanding of human emotions.
