Questions & Answers
Havaneses are popular, small dogs belonging to the toy group. They have long, fluffy coats and their fur can come in a number of different colors. Commonly described as energetic and loyal, Havaneses are great companion animals and are often said to have a "happy go lucky" attitude. This is a breed of dog that loves to be around humans, and they are also quite fond of playing games. Very self-reliant, they can adapt to a variety of environments and have proven to be excellent watchdogs.
The Havanese has a single-layered, non-shedding coat that is usually curly or wavy. The texture varies from soft and silky to wiry. The coat sheds little to no fur, making it a great choice for people who suffer from allergies. The color range is quite varied, with many combinations of black, white, silver, and cream, and some dogs may even have brindle or sable markings. In terms of grooming, the coat should be brushed weekly or bi-weekly to keep it looking its best and prevent it from becoming matted.
Havaneses eat a variety of foods, including dry dog food made specifically for Havaneses, wet food, home-cooked meals, snacks, and treats. For dry food, it’s important to make sure the food is of high quality and grain free to prevent digestive problems. The wet food should be natural, with no additives or preservatives. Most Havaneses enjoy fresh meat and vegetable combinations as well. Additionally, many Havaneses enjoy fruits and vegetables such as apples, oranges, carrots, and sweet potatoes.
To best prepare your home for your new Havanese, you should get your home dog-ready. Start by puppy-proofing the area they'll spend most time in. This may include blocking off access to any areas you don't want the pup to explore, such as stairs, and securing any hazards, such as electric cords. Stock up on all the necessary supplies, such as food, treats, chew toys, a stuffed animal or two, a pooper scooper, a leash, a collar, and puppy potty pads.
On average, Havaneses are known to grow to a size that is between 8 and 12 inches at the shoulder; however, some may grow slightly bigger or smaller than this. In terms of weight, most Havaneses will remain in the 6to 8-pound range, though some may exceed this. Ultimately, the size of your individual Havanese will depend on the health and genetics of the parent dogs and their lineage. Proper diet and plenty of exercise are also key factors in helping your Havanese reach its full growth potential.
It is recommended that a Havanese should engage in at least 30 minutes of walking or moderate physical activity per day. This should be split into two or three shorter sessions if possible to ensure your pup stays physically fit and maintains a healthy weight. When starting out, you may want to slowly build up the exercise time each day, ensuring to make the walks fun and engaging for both yourself and your pup. Your pup needs to be fitted with a properly fitted dog harness and up-to-date with their vaccinations. Additionally, make sure they always wear a tag that includes your contact information.
Havaneses make great first-time dogs because of their friendly, playful, and gentle personalities. They get along well with people and enjoy spending time with their owners. They tend to be easy to train and can learn basic commands quickly. Their small size and relatively low energy level make them great for people with small apartments or limited outdoor spaces. Plus, they have a low-maintenance coat, so they don't require a lot of grooming. In other words, if you're looking for your first pup, then the Havaneses might just be the perfect breed for you.
Training a Havanese requires a consistent, loving approach while establishing yourself as the "alpha" of the relationship. Begin your training by teaching your pup basic commands such as sit, stay, and come. Reward good behavior with positive reinforcement and treats, such as praise or a favorite toy. You should also set boundaries and expectations for your pup. This means that your pup must understand basic house training rules, such as not chewing on furniture or going to the bathroom inside the house. Once your pup understands these basics, you can progress to more advanced commands such as hand signals, agility training and more.
