Questions & Answers
The most interesting thing about Havanaeses is their unique culture which combines the different aspects of their history. From the combination of Spanish, African, and Caribbean heritage, Havana is a place that boasts an exciting and vibrant cultural spirit. This is a place full of music, art, and food that is sure to capture the hearts and flavors of those who visit. The people are also warm and friendly, always willing to share their customs, traditions, and hospitality to anyone that drops by.
Havaneses are actually considered a hypoallergenic breed of dog. Although no dog is completely hypoallergenic, the Havaneses produce less dander than other breeds of dogs due to their low-shedding coat. Any potential allergic reactions a person may experience when coming in contact with the breed can be minimized by regularly brushing and bathing them to keep the amount of dander produced to a minimum. Additionally, the Havaneses breed has one of the lowest risk of shedding of any breed, which largely contributes to their being considered hypoallergenic.
Havaneses are small and delicate dogs that require special attention to their diet and nutrition. It is important to understand what your pup should and should not eat. As a general rule, they should not be given any human food as treats. Human food may contain components that are toxic and unhealthy for your Havaneses. Specifically, avoid feeding Havaneses onion, garlic, grapes, and raisins as these can be toxic to them. It is best that they stick to food specifically designed for their breed in order to ensure they get the right amount of nutrition.
Before welcoming your new Havanese into your home, it is important to take the necessary steps to ensure a smooth transition to their new environment. Make sure that your home is pet-friendly, that you have plenty of food and water bowls, a comfortable and safe bed for them to sleep in, chew toys for them to play with, and outdoor space where they can do their business.
Havaneses come in a wide variety of sizes. Small Havaneses can weigh anywhere between 7 12 pounds and have an average height of 8 11 inches. Medium Havaneses are usually around 13 18 pounds in weight and have an average height of 12 14 inches. Large Havaneses typically weigh 19 28 pounds and are generally 14 16 inches tall. There is also the Mini Havaneses variety, which usually weighs 7 9 pounds and stands around 8 10 inches in height.
It is generally not recommended to take your Havanese running. The breed is relatively small and has a delicate build, making it unsuitable for the rigors of an intense running workout. However, if your Havanese is healthy and has been properly conditioned, mild walks and short, slow-paced runs can be beneficial and appropriate. When introducing any form of more intense physical exercise, start slowly and with distance/time that is comfortable for your Havanese to handle and gradually build up. Be sure to pay attention to your Havanese's behavior and physical comfort levels during the activity.
Generally speaking, Havaneses are good with kids, with some of the breed's trademark friendliness and affability. They often form strong bonds with children and love to spend time with them. Additionally, Havaneses are known to be playful and enjoy learning various tricks with their owners. It is worth noting that proper socialization is key for any new pet, including the Havaneses. This is critical to ensure the puppy knows how to behave around kids and strangers. With proper training, Havaneses can make excellent family dogs and great companions for children.
Training a Havanese is a great way to bond with your pet and keep them active. While there is no universal answer to how many minutes per day you need to train your Havanese, it is essential to ensure your pup is getting enough exercise and reinforcement of commands. A good rule of thumb is to spend about 10-15 minutes per day training your pup with structured commands and activities that you can break down into smaller sections such as 5-minute intervals if needed. During these activities, reward your pup for their successes as it will help them learn faster and enjoy it more.
