Questions & Answers
Havaneses are known for their intelligent and loyal nature, making them an ideal companion for families. They are also known for their striking coats, ranging in colors from white to black and all shades in between. Another fun fact about Havaneses is that they are great swimmers! They possess a natural instinct to instinctively swim when submerged in water, which makes them great for activities like boating and water sports. As well, they have been known to be very protective of their owners and are great watchdogs, as they do not bark unnecessarily.
Yes, Havaneses are generally considered hypoallergenic. This is because their coats are considered to be non-shedding, which means they are less likely to cause irritation to those with allergies than other breeds. While it isn't completely guaranteed that a Havaneses won't cause an allergic reaction its owners, studies have shown that individuals with allergies tend to do better with Havaneses than other breeds of dogs. Additionally, regular brushing will help to keep the amount of hair that may cause allergies to a minimum.
Havaneses should not be fed human food such as chocolate, raisins, macadamia nuts or popcorn, as these can be potentially deadly. They should also not be fed garlic, onions, foods containing xylitol, caffeine, or alcohol, which can all be toxic. Feeding your Havaneses a low fat diet with a focus on high quality proteins such as boiled chicken or whitefish, cooked eggs, and cooked oats can provide a balanced and nutritious lifestyle.
Before getting a Havanese, you should make sure to purchase items such as a leash and collar, food and water bowls, crate, several toys, and dog food. You should also consider having groom supplies on hand such as pet shampoo, a brush, nail trimmers, and dental care products. Additionally, essential items could include something like a bed or blanket, treats, puppy pads, training aids, a gate, and stairs to help your Havanese navigate onto and off of furniture.
Your Havanese puppy will be a small dog, growing to a height of 8 to 11 inches and a weight of 7 to 13 pounds. The size of your puppy will depend on its breed and will also vary among individual puppies. Generally speaking, Havanese puppies grow at a relatively steady rate and reach their full size around one year of age. However, keep in mind that all dogs are different. While some may reach their full size a bit earlier or later than others, it is still important to provide proper nutrition and exercise to ensure healthy growth and developement.
Walking your Havanese for the recommended amount of time is important for their physical and mental health. As a general guideline, it is recommended to allow your Havanese around 20-30 minutes of exercise a day. This should be done in two separate 10-15 minute walks and it's important to make sure your pup isn't doing too much in one go as they can easily tire or become overexcited. Remember that walks should be tailored to the individual dog's age, weight, health, and taste in exercise.
Generally, Havaneses do get along with other pets, provided that they are properly socialized. Socializing a Havaneses with other pets can be a rewarding experience, as these dogs typically exhibit a trusting and friendly nature when around other animals. Before introducing a Havaneses to pets of other species, it's important to take precautions to ensure they can comfortably coexist in the same space. Make sure to use calming methods and use leashes if necessary to set boundaries.
Training a Havanese can be an enjoyable and rewarding experience. However, it is important to understand that Havanese are generally considered to be more of a challenging breed when it comes to training, as they have a mind of their own and can be quite stubborn at times. While they can learn quickly, patience and consistency are key, as well as providing your Havanese with plenty of structure and routine. A positive reinforcement approach is also important in order to encourage desired behaviors, as well as plenty of socialization opportunities.
