Questions & Answers
Havaneses are a small breed of dog that belong to the Bichon family. This breed is a naturally cheerful and energetic dog and has a loyal and affectionate nature. Often they are referred to as the "little lion" of the dog world due to their spirited personalities. These companion dogs are known for being intelligent and alert, and can also be quite gregarious. The Havaneses are well suited for city life, as they are quite adaptable and can thrive in every environment.
The Havaneses breed is a small to medium-sized breed of dog that is known for its long and silky white fur. As with all dogs, the breed will naturally shed some of their fur. However, when compared to other breeds, the Havaneses is one of the least shedding breeds, resulting in minimal shedding of fur around the home. In addition to their manageable shedding, the main reason this breed is coveted by many people is because of its friendly personalities and its capacity for learning.
As a Havaneses owner, it is important to know that your pup may have very specific dietary needs, and there are certain foods that should be avoided. It is not recommended that you feed your Havaneses grapes, raisins, chocolate, onions, garlic, or macadamia nuts; as consumption has been linked to health concerns like kidney failure. Additionally, some human foods can contain too much fat, sugar, or salt which can be harmful to the Havaneses.
Before bringing a Havanese into your home, it's important to have all the essentials in place. Start by getting a great crate for potty training and overnight stays; a comfy and supportive bed in the dog's designated area; a good quality food and water bowl; age appropriate harness/leads for walking; a brush and a comb to maintain good fur health; a toothbrush and toothpaste; small-sized chew toys and interactive toys for mental stimulation; puppy pads for potty-training; treats; and last but not least, lots of love and patience!
Generally speaking, Havaneses are considered small dogs. These dogs are of a toy breed, as they generally weigh between 7 and 13 pounds and reach a height of 8 to 11 inches. This makes them an ideal companion or lapdog, as they can fit in small places without taking much space. Furthermore, their affectionate nature makes them beloved family pets who love to spend time with their owners. At the same time, their alertness makes them good watchdogs, as they bark to alert of possible danger.
Havaneses need a moderate amount of exercise to keep them healthy and happy. They enjoy daily walks, playtime, and runs both indoors and out. Because they are a small-to-medium-sized breed, they don't require overly strenuous activity. Just a 20-minute daily walk is plenty to keep them physically and mentally stimulated. That being said, practically any activity they can do with their owner is a great way to keep them fit and healthy, and they typically love swimming and fetch.
Havaneses are wonderful family dogs and can make amazing companions. Their outgoing personalities, loving and loyal nature, and need for companionship make them excellent pets and family dogs. With their intelligence, small size, and laid-back temperament, Havaneses are very easy to train and can quickly pick up commands like 'sit' and 'stay'. Since they need lots of human contact and to stay close to their owners, they easily form strong, loving bonds with their families.
Training a Havanese varies depending on specific needs, but typically a Havanese should get at least 15-20 minutes of training each day to stay happy and healthy. It is important to remember that training should be a positive experience for your pet, so it is important to have realistic expectations of what your dog can learn each day and to be patient and consistent. To maximize the training time, it can help to break up the training session into smaller sessions throughout the day.
