Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a toy breed of dog native to Cuba. It is believed to be a descendant of Bichon Tenerife and Bolognese dogs. One of the most beloved breeds, these dogs are intelligent, loyal, and affectionate family companions. The Havanese has a well-balanced and pleasant temperament. They get along well with children, adults, and other animals. The Havanese also enjoys the company of other dogs. They are very active and require regular walks and playtime.
While many breeds of dogs are considered to be hypoallergenic, Havaneses are not one of them. In general, these dogs are not known for being particularly hypoallergenic. However, while not entirely hypoallergenic, Havaneses still possess many qualities that might help reduce the presence of allergens in the home. Such qualities include their thick, curly coat which helps to trap allergens, as well as their low-shedding qualities which helps to prevent hair and dander from ending up on furniture, clothing, and carpets.
Havaneses should not be fed large amounts of high-fat snacks and "people food" such as dark chocolate and avocado, as this can cause them to suffer from serious health problems. They should also avoid poultry, fish, or any processed foods that contain preservatives. Rawhide dog chews that are not certified organic, as well as bones or anything cooked, are not suitable treats for these fluffy little dogs. Additionally, cooked human foods are generally not suitable for Havaneses, as they lack the neccesary nutrients tailored to the breed.
Before welcoming a new Havanese into your home, you should take time to prepare for its arrival. Besides stocking up on food, toys, and other supplies, it's important to establish good routines and create a comfortable space. Set aside a designated area where the pup can be supervised safely and where it can rest, eat and play. Research the breed to learn basic grooming needs, exercise requirements, and any unique characteristics. Become familiar with training techniques and develop an obedience plan that's individualized to the pup's needs.
Havaneses, commonly referred to as the “Havanese Bichon”, typically grow between 8 to 11 inches, and usually weigh anywhere from 7 to 14 pounds when they reach full adult size. Height is not the only factor in determining size; bone structure, coat density and other aspects can often contribute to a “larger” or “smaller” look. For this reason, the size of a Havaneses can vary within a litter and even within the same breed.
How much exercise your Havanese should get depends upon their age, activity level, and health. Generally, walking your Havanese for 30 minutes a day is considered to be a good amount of exercise. You should however work up to this slowly to determine how much your Havanese is comfortable with. If walking is too taxing for them, you can incorporate shorter bursts of play throughout the day as an alternative form of exercise. When playing, it can be helpful to use structured activities such as playing fetch or hide-and-seek to encourage movement.
Havaneses, commonly referred to as the "Velvet Haitians", have been known to get along extremely well with other pets. Having originally been bred for companionship, Havaneses love the company of other animals and thrive in family settings. They're affectionate and social dogs who love to play, explore, and cuddle. Havaneses are known to welcome the addition of other animals to the household, even encouraging activities and play with their pet siblings. It's important to supervise all interactions between young puppies and other animals until you're sure they are comfortable and safe.
Havaneses are often considered to be one of the smartest dog breeds in the world, and for good reason. They are incredibly quick learners, easily picked up on training cues and commands, and are highly sociable. They make excellent family pets and excel at learning tasks, making them very capable and intuitive companions. This breed is often eager to please and matures very quickly, which often leads them to solve problems more quickly than other breeds. Furthermore, since they are small, they do not require a large space to get their needs met.
