Questions & Answers
Havaneses belong to the Bichon family of dogs, which is a group of small dogs developed to be the companions of royalty. As a result, they are friendly, outgoing, gentle and easy to train. They also make great watchdogs, as their alert nature will make them let out a bark if they sense an intruder. Characteristically, they have a very soft, curly coat and mesmerizing, dark eyes. This breed of dog is especially intelligent, and much like small children, they need to have their minds filled with interesting activities to remain content and avoid getting into mischief.
Havaneses, also known as Cuban Bichon, can be generally considered to be hypoallergenic. While there is no guarantee that any individual dog or individual person would be allergy-free, Havaneses have low-shedding coats which contain a minimal amount of allergen proteins and typically do not cause any reactions in people who are typically prone to allergies around animals. This is due to their coats primarily being made of protein-rich, water-resistant hair instead of fur like many other dog breeds.
As with any breed, you should avoid feeding Havaneses certain foods and treats as they can be harmful to their health. Generally, you should avoid any food that is high in fat and salt, such as bacon, sausages and other processed meats. You should also not give Havaneses table scraps or foods from popular fast food restaurants as they can contain ingredients that are too rich or unhealthy. Furthermore, rawhide and other bones can be dangerous for Havaneses as they may splinter which can be hazardous to their digestive systems.
Becoming the best puppy parent for your Havanese means taking the time to understand your pup's own unique personality, needs, and preferences. To provide the best care, it's important to research the breed and create an environment and routine that meets your pup's individual needs. Provide plenty of Exercise, consistency, and socialization to ensure your dog is physically and mentally healthy. Offering lots of love, rewards, and positive reinforcement will strengthen the bond between you and your pup.
It is difficult to determine the exact size of a Havanese puppy due to a number of factors, such as gender, diet, and exercise routine. On average, Havanese puppies are 9"-11" tall when they are fully grown. They typically weigh between 7-13 lbs. However, this is not an exact science, as puppies of the same breed may develop differently. A good rule of thumb is that Havanese puppies tend to double their weight during the first year of life.
Walking is a great way to keep your Havanese healthy and active. How much to walk your Havanese depends on a few factors, including their age and fitness level. Generally, an adult Havanese should get around 20 to 30 minutes of exercise daily and should have a few 10-20 minute walks per day. For puppies, walks should last no longer than 10 minutes as their joints and bones are still developing. In addition, make sure to provide activities to stimulate their minds such as interactive and puzzle toys.
Absolutely! Havaneses make wonderful family dogs due to their friendly personalities, loyal natures, and entertaining antics. This breed is known for its intelligence and eagerness to please, so it is easy to train and form a strong bond. The small size makes them ideal for small spaces, and their cheerful disposition makes them excellent playmates for children. Additionally, their low-shedding coat makes them hypoallergenic and they require relatively little grooming. All things considered, the Havaneses is an excellent breed for loving family homes.
Training a Havanese is a rewarding activity, but it's important to keep in mind that it requires a daily commitment. That being said, the amount of minutes per day you need to train your Havanese will depend on a variety of factors, such as the age of the Havanese, their prior experience level and their temperament. As a general rule of thumb, though, a good baseline for training a Havanese is around 5 minutes per day, although this can be adjusted based on the individual's needs.
