Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a breed of small dog native to Cuba. It is a cheerful, outgoing dog that loves cuddling, playing, and spending time with its family. It is a member of the American Kennel Club, and recognized as the only native Cuban dog breed! The ideal Havanese is described as being a sturdy, patient, and loving companion. This breed has a coat that can come in any color, however its wavy, silky fur is very soft to the touch.
Havaneses are non-shedding dogs, which means they produce very little loose hair. Although the breed is considered hypoallergenic, they do require some grooming. Since Havaneses have long, curly fur, they need to have regular brushing to maintain their coat. Additionally, different types of haircuts can also help to keep the coat looking its best. Havaneses also need regular ear cleaning and nail trimming. While non-shedding, a Havaneses' coat does need to be monitored and cared for periodically in order to keep it in the best condition.
Havaneses have a diverse and balanced diet that includes a variety of proteins, carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables. They do well when provided with a range of commercially produced dry kibble and wet food, as well as treats like raw meat and home-cooked meals. It's recommended to start with a high-quality, grain-free diet as a base and introduce small amounts of new food over time. Havaneses should also get plenty of exercise and have plenty of clean, fresh water available at all times to stay healthy and active.
To prepare your home for a new Havanese, start by making sure the environment is safe and comfortable. Make sure to puppy proof the home by covering any cords and making sure all medications and cleaning supplies are out of reach. Install a few gates throughout your home to designate certain areas that need to be more contained and/or off-limits. Invest in a few essentials, such as a collar and leash, food and water bowls, toys, and a comfortable bed to give your pup a place of their own.
Your Havanese puppy's size will depend on many factors. Generally, they will reach full size at 8-10 months of age and grow to a height of 8-11 inches. Adult males typically weigh between 7 and 13 pounds and adult females between 6 and 12 pounds. However, your pup's size may be affected by the size of its parents, the level of nutrition it receives, and the level of exercise it gets. It is best to be aware of the considerations and be prepared for variability in size or weight when you adopt or purchase your Havanese puppy.
The amount of time you should be walking your Havanese depends on their age and physical fitness level. Generally speaking, puppies and senior dogs should take shorter walks (30 minutes or less), whereas young and adult dogs may benefit from longer walks of 45 minutes or more. The most important factor to keep in mind is to be sure your four-legged companion is getting enough exercise. Keeping them agile and healthy is key. Additionally, make sure your Havanese is well-hydrated when walking, take frequent potty and water breaks, and keep them on a safe and comfortable leash.
Yes, Havaneses generally get along very well with children. They are known to be one of the most friendly, loyal, and protective toy breed dogs, making them ideal companions for families with kids. They tend to be very good, tolerant, and patient with even the smallest of children, and will be their loyal companion throughout the child's life. They are also active, fun-loving dogs, so they are sure to keep up with the fastest kids in the pack. With proper socialization and training, a Havaneses can be an excellent family pet.
Training your Havanese is an important part of being a responsible pet owner. Like any dog, the Havanese is eager to please its owners and learn new tasks. The first step is to establish yourself as the leader of the pack as your dog will automatically be looking for direction from you. Provide consistent and positive reinforcement using treats and verbal praise. Make sure to keep training sessions short and fun. Break up larger tasks into small, manageable pieces. Take the time to reward your dog for proper behavior. When training, be sure to enforce boundaries and consequences. Remain positive and never use punishment.
