Questions & Answers
Havanese are a breed of small companion dogs that have been gaining popularity in recent years. Here are a few fun facts about them. First, they were the national dog of Cuba up until the Revolution of 1959. This also makes them the only breed of Bichon to be native to Cuba. Havanese also happen to be the smallest member of the Bichon family, weighing in at anywhere from 7 to 14 pounds. Another fun fact is that these dogs are very intelligent and eager to please, so they are highly trainable.
The Havanese coat is quite unique. It comes in a variety of colors including black, blue, brown, cream, or silver and is of medium length and quite silky in texture. The coat may be wavy, curly, or corded with a double coat a soft and wooly undercoat and a longer, thicker topcoat. The Havanese coat requires regular brushing and occasional bathing. Generally, during the winter, the coat is much thicker and whereas, in the summertime, it tends to be slightly lighter.
Havaneses are no different than any other dog breed when it comes to nutrition. Generally, they need to eat quality dry kibble plus occasional wet food, along with healthy snacks and treats. It is important to provide them with a balanced diet that meets their particular needs as a small breed. Also, to ensure they are getting the proper nutrients, Havaneses can benefit from foods fortified with omega-3 fatty acid, like fish oil, along with other vitamins, minerals, and essential nutrients.
Before getting a Havanese, there are a few essentials you should purchase to keep your pup happy and healthy. First, you'll need a few items to create a comfortable space for your pup, such as a crate, bed, collar/harness, and toys. You'll also need a quality food appropriate for small breed dogs, treats, and ingredients for home-cooked meals. In the grooming realm, you'll need brushes, scissors, nail clippers, shampoo, conditioner, and toothpaste.
The size of your Havanese puppy will depend on a variety of factors such as genetics, nutrition, and even exercise. Generally speaking, female Havanese puppies will typically reach a height of 8 to 11 inches tall at the shoulder while male puppies are slightly larger measuring 9 to 12 inches in height. Though these puppies are of a smaller size, they still have a surprisingly strong build. In terms of weight, this breed typically ranges from 8 to 15 pounds and is considered to be fully mature when their weight reaches 9 to 14 pounds.
Havaneses absolutely love to swim! They're a water-loving breed and enjoy any opportunity to splash around. This makes them an ideal pet for individuals living in beachside towns or near bodies of water. Swimming is also a great way to exercise Havaneses, giving them a fun and healthy outlet for their energy. While some have a natural affinity for swimming, others may need a little encouragement to get started. But with time, most Havaneses become comfortable and eager participants when swimming activities are presented.
Yes! Havaneses are great with kids! Known for their intelligence, patience and devotedness, they easily bond with youngsters. Havaneses can be very protective of their guardians, but also make excellent playmates. They always have an out-going, fun-loving, and happy attitude that can rub off on kids, making them the perfect family pet. They are easy to train, and because of their moderate size, they can adapt to any living space.
Training a Havanese is an enjoyable and rewarding experience for both the pup and their human companion. However, it does require dedication and patience from the owner. Havanese dogs have a natural desire to please and a quickness to learn, but they are also intelligent and inquisitive, which means they need to be properly guided to stay on track. With consistency in positive reinforcement and regular practice, the owner will be able to create a life-long bond with their Havanese pup and learn how to teach them obedience.
