Questions & Answers
The most interesting thing about Havaneses is their long-standing loyalty and intelligence. They are extremely trainable and, like many other breeds, are natural born "people pleasers." This makes them very easy to work with and train, making them great family pets. Havaneses are also known to be highly affectionate, loving to cuddle and give hugs to their owners. They're active, confident dogs, known for being good around other pets and children. Havaneses have thick, curly fur which makes them cute to look at, and they don't need much grooming.
It is possible that Havaneses may cause an allergic reaction in some people, as with all breeds of dog, but to determine if you have an allergy, you should consult a medical professional. If you're allergic to cats, dogs, or have had allergies to other pets in the past, it's likely that you may also be allergic to this breed of dog. Symptoms of allergies can include red, itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing, runny or stuffy nose, and hives.
Havaneses should not be fed anything that is high in fat content, as it can increase their risk of obesity and related health issues. Additionally, do not feed them table scraps, as they may contain ingredients that are bad for them, such as onion and garlic in any form. To keep your Havaneses healthy and happy, provide them with a variety of foods of high quality, as it will help them lead a balanced and nutritious diet.
Before getting a Havanese, some essential items you'll need to buy include a crate, food and water bowls, food and treats, a collar and leash, shampoo, nail clippers, a brush and comb, toys, and bedding. Additionally, you may want to purchase a few tools for basic grooming, such as puppy toothpaste and a toothbrush, a flea and tick prevention product, and waste bags. Of course, it is important to provide your new companion with lots of love and affection, and enough of your time for playtime and walks.
Havaneses are considered a small breed of dog, generally weighing between 7-12 pounds and standing at 8-11 inches tall at the shoulder. They do not measure up to the size standards typically expected from larger dogs, such as Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds. Even though they are small, Havaneses can be quite active and lively, needing daily exercise and mental stimulation. This means that they can still keep up with larger breeds and could easily fit into a family with a big dog if well supervised.
Havaneses are an active breed that require daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. A typical Havaneses needs 30-40 minutes of exercise daily, with activities such as walks or runs, playing fetch, or agility obstacle courses. While those born to working or sporting lines may need longer or higher intensity exercise sessions, most Havaneses would benefit from three to four moderately intense daily sessions. Additionally, mental exercise for the Havaneses is also important.
Generally, Havaneses are friendly and sociable dogs who get along well with other pets including cats, birds, rabbits, and other small animals. Some individuals may be particularly sensitive to being around other animals, but usually this can be addressed using a positive and gentle approach. These dogs tend to be very intelligent and love playing with other animals, making them great companions for all kinds of households. It's important to remember to socialize your Havaneses at an early age to other animals in an effort to ensure they grow up to be sociable and get along with others.
Training your Havanese is an important part of taking care of your pup. It should start as soon as you bring them home, and should be a consistent part of being a responsible pet-owner. Familiarize your pup with commands like ‘sit,’ ‘stay,’ ‘come,’ and ‘no.’ Use treats, toys, and positive reinforcement when they obey your commands. Be patient when training, and be sure to offer lots of praise and rewards to show your Havanese that their behavior is appreciated.
