Questions & Answers
The Havanese is a breed of small dog that originated from Cuba. They have a long, silky coat that comes in a variety of colors, including white, cream, golden, silver, blue, chocolate, and black. They have dark expressive eyes, small erect ears, and a teddy bear profile with a black nose and lips. Havanese have an outgoing personality, they are intelligent, active and love to play. They are very loyal to their owners and make great companions. Their adaptability and intelligence make them suitable for homes of all sizes.
The Havanese has a soft, silky, double-coat fur that can come in a variety of colors. The outer covering is medium in length and naturally waves, but it is also possible to keep longer for a more flowing appearance. The inner layer is shorter and keeps the skin protected throughout any weather. The most common colors are cream, white, grey, black, red, sable, and champagne. The texture of the coat is often described as plush and more like cotton candy than traditional dog fur.
Feeding a Havanese the correct food is essential to maintaining their health and wellbeing. A high-quality, species-appropriate diet that is nutritionally balanced should be fed to meet the needs of your pet. This means opting for high-quality carbohydrate sources, such as whole grains, that are included in the diet alongside animal protein sources, such as lean & rich-in-omega-3 fatty acids fish, or organic chicken. Avoid processed foods and treats with artificial preservatives, as these can cause digestive issues.
To best prepare your home for your new Havanese, it's important to create a familiar, stimulating environment that encourages your pup to settle in. Start by consolidating any hazardous or dangerous items that could be within reach of your pup, such as children's toys, electrical cords, and cleaning supplies. Choose a designated area for your pup's bed, food, and water bowl, and be sure to puppy-proof the area. Take time to introduce new scents, noises, and sights gradually until your pup has become comfortable.
Havaneses come in many sizes, ranging from Toy (4-7 lbs) to Standard (7-12 lbs). The Toy size is recognized by the American Kennel Club but the other sizes fall into the Non-Sporting category. The breed's large, expressive ears and outgoing personality are recognizable in all sizes! Depending on how the dogs are bred and what they're bred for, these sizes can vary. While the Toy size is mostly bred for show and the smaller sizes are more common as companion dogs, the Standard size is sometimes used in agility or obedience dogs.
Havaneses typically need at least 30 minutes of exercise per day to stay healthy. This can include activities such as walking, playing fetch, or running in an enclosed area. If more exercise isn't an option due to age or health, Havaneses should still have ample time each day for mental stimulation and play, combined with the areas provided to them four times a day for pottying and visiting outdoors. Remember, for larger breeds, simply taking them out for a leisurely stroll may not get their heart-rate up sufficiently to meet their daily exercise needs.
Havaneses can be a wonderful breed of dog for first-time owners, as they are highly devoted, loyal companions that form very strong bonds with their humans. They can be a great fit for inexperienced owners due to their intelligence, making it easy to train them for basic cues. As they are small, they don't require a lot of space or exercise and can often be content in a smaller environment. However, Havaneses should not be left alone for long periods; they need companionship, stimulation, and plenty of love.
Training a Havanese requires consistency. The general rule of thumb is to provide at least 15 minutes of training each day, but more is better. Depending on the difficulty of the tasks being trained, the length of training sessions can be longer. For example, if you are working on more challenging commands or tricks, it is best to begin with short training sessions of 3-5 minutes (break those up throughout the day if possible) and gradually increase the duration of each training session as your dog progresses.
