Questions & Answers
The most interesting thing about Havaneses is their unique and spunky personalities. Not only are they small in size, but they have a lot of energy and a love for life that you don't see in many other breeds. As part of the Bichon family, they are known for being cheerful, good-natured, and sociable. They are also fairly smart and can learn commands and tricks quickly, making them great companions. On top of all that, their beautiful, curly coats come in a variety of colors, ranging from creamy white to black and tan.
Yes, Havaneses are non-shedding dogs. This makes them great for families with people who may be allergic to pet fur. They are considered hypoallergenic. Havaneses tend to have long, silky coats. While this coat does require regular grooming to keep from developing matts, avoiding pet dander and hair in the home is an easier windfall. The pH balance in their skin is naturally higher than other breeds, meaning their fur and skin are naturally better at repelling dirt, dust, dander, and allergens.
They may be small, but Havaneses have unique dietary needs that should be taken into consideration. As with any breed, it is important to avoid providing food that can be considered hazardous. Anything with bones should be avoided, as they can cause choking or digestive issues, as well as any food that is high in fat. Foods that are too salty or contain artificial sweeteners are also a no-no. Instead, provide a nutritionally-balanced formula specifically made for small breeds for their meals.
Before welcoming your new Havanese puppy into your home, it is important to prepare. This includes ensuring you have all the necessary items such as food, water bowls, bedding, a crate, and toys. You should also research the breed thoroughly to understand the habits, health, traits, and other specific needs of the Havanese. Once the puppy is home, you'll want to introduce them to their space and start teaching basic commands and building trust. Don't overlook the importance of socializing your puppy with people and other animals.
Havaneses are small dogs that have a delightful personality. When full grown, Havaneses generally stand between 8-11 inches tall and are typically between 7-13 pounds. Though they are not considered a large breed, Havaneses are still assertive, energetic, and loyal. They have strong bonds with their owners and may require a bit more attention than some other breeds, but make wonderful family pets. Despite their smaller size, Havaneses enjoy physical and mental exercise, including walking, game playing, and occasional trips to the groomer for an aspiring 'puppet cut.
Taking your Havanese running is certainly an option to help them keep their energy levels up and bodies healthy, but it is important to keep in mind that this breed is not necessarily a running breed. Although they may enjoy runs or short jogs, this breed may have a hard time keeping up with more active owners and is more suited to low-impact forms of exercise, such as brisk walks and hikes.
Havaneses are known for being very playful and friendly with other pets. They usually enjoy the company of other animals and have a good temperament with other pets. Generally-speaking, Havaneses get along well with other cats, dogs, birds, and small animals, as long as they are properly socialized. With proper guidance, Havaneses can even get along well with other Havaneses, creating a fun, outgoing, and confident crew of housemates.
Training a Havanese can be an enjoyable experience as these dogs are eager to please, making them great candidates for training. However, even though they are intelligent and sweet dogs, they can be a bit independent and require patience and consistency to ensure polished results. They should be trained to associate positive behavior with being rewarded, as the best way to reinforce desirable behaviors. They do best with short, clear commands, and should understand the 6 basic commands (sit, stay, come, down, heal and off).
