Questions & Answers
A Havanese is a small, happy, and intelligent breed of dog native to Cuba. It is an immediate descendent of a group of small Barbichon-type dogs from the Mediterranean Region. They have a medium-length silky coat that generally comes in a variety of colors such as black and cream, silver and white, and chocolate or sable. The average Havanese stands at about 8 to 11 inches tall and typically weighs seven to 13 pounds. Havanese are very sociable and make great family pets. They are also known for being gentle and playful with children.
The Havanese coat is quite distinctive and eye-catching. It's a long, fluffy and silky coat that requires regular grooming to maintain its beautiful and unique texture. The hair is soft and flat on the head, while the remainder of the body has slightly wavier locks. The outer coat is profuse, while the undercoat is softer and somewhat woolly. It comes in a variety of colors, including white, cream, black, blue, mahogany, silver, and sometimes even sable.
Havaneses don't have any special dietary needs that differ from other breeds. However, they do benefit from certain nutrients more so than other breeds. For instance, their age can necessitate specific vitamins or minerals in their diets that support joint and muscle health, such as glucosamine and chondroitin. Havaneses may also benefit from fatty acids, particularly Omega-3 fatty acids, as these can help improve their coat condition and immune system health. Additionally, these small dogs require a diet with more calories per pound than large breeds to account for their increased metabolism.
Havanese may have some special requirements depending on their age and lifestyle. As a small breed, Havanese are prone to skittishness and can easily be overstimulated in large or loud environments, so they need slow introductions to new people and animals. It's also important to create a daily routine that includes meal times, playtimes, walks, and training sessions with plenty of opportunities for rest. Grooming is also key; Havanese coats need regular brushing or they can become matted.
Your Havanese puppy will generally reach its mature size between 8-11 lbs when fully grown, although this can provide a very wide range of sizes. There is no reliable scientific way to predict how big your pup will grow, as a variety of environmental, genetic and nutritional influences come into play. The best indicator of size is to measure its parents and other relatives, as puppies tend to grow to a similar size as their parents. Your vet or breeder may be able to provide an estimated size range for your pup based on this information.
Generally speaking, an adult Havanese should get at least 20 minutes of moderate exercise every day. Breaking this into several smaller blocks of 5-10 minute walks throughout the day is ideal for these dogs as it gives them an opportunity to burn off excess energy, exercise their minds and muscles and gets them out to go potty. It’s recommended that your Havanese should engage in some kind of activity every day, whether it be a short walk, a game of tag, playing fetch, or burrowing in the yard.
Havaneses are generally known to be affectionate with children, as they are especially friendly and loyal dogs. They are small and sociable, which makes them perfect playmates for kids. They are reliable with children and behave obediently with adults. They do not normally bark uncontrollably and love to snuggle up with their family, making them great extra members of the family. Being so smart and intuitive, they can adjust their behavior quickly whether in or out of the house.
Training a Havanese is a wonderful way to form a loving connection with your pet and is relatively easy to do. This breed is known for being obedient, loving, and loyal, all of which makes them a pleasure to train. They can learn basic commands quickly and excel in agility courses. That said, all breeds require time, attention, and consistency during the training process. In addition, Havanese are smart and can become bored quickly if you don't keep them stimulated. Patience, positive reinforcement, and rewards, like treats, are also key.
