Questions & Answers
A Labrador Retriever is a beautiful, muscular and family-friendly breed of dog known for its intelligence, outgoing personality and eagerness to please. Labradors have a waterproof double coat that serves them in winter and summer alike. Often known as a "people-pleasing," gentle dog, Labradors get along well with children and other animals alike. Their ease of training and obedient nature make them popular additions to families and households. Labradors excel in obedience and agility trials, and have a tendency to be exceptionally protective of their homes and family.
Labrador Retrievers are not non-shedding, but they do have a relatively low to medium amount of shedding. The Labrador Retriever coat is made up of a soft, water-resistant, thick, short-haired undercoat and a slightly coarser outer coat with guard hairs that protect it from the elements. The undercoat sheds seasonally, usually twice a year, and the outer coat sheds throughout the year in smaller amounts. With good care and regular grooming, the tendency to shed can be lessened and controlled.
Labrador Retrievers should not be fed chocolate or xylitol containing products, as these can cause serious illnesses or even death if ingested. Additionally, raisins, grapes, macadamia nuts, garlic, onions, chives, and raw yeast dough can be detrimental to their health. Feeding a Labrador Retriever human food can also be unhealthful and should be avoided as much as possible. Excessive fatty treats or table scraps are not recommended for their diet, as they are more prone to obesity than other breeds.
Preparing for a new Labrador Retriever is an exciting time! To ensure your pup has a smooth transition into your home, start by researching the breed and familiarizing yourself with their needs. Make sure you have all the necessary supplies, such as a collar, leash, chew toys, and food and water dishes. Have your home puppy-proofed and ensure there are places for your pup to relax, such as a snug bed and some designated chew-spots. Find a veterinarian that specializes in canines and set up a wellness visit and vaccinations.
Labrador Retrievers are considered to be larger than average-sized dogs. They typically weigh between 55 and 80 pounds and stand at an average height of 21 to 24 inches, making them larger than most breeds. Labradors are known for being strong and athletic, and they come with a thick double coat that helps them withstand severe weather conditions. While Labradors are known for their medium-sized build, they can still be considered a big dog.
Yes, in fact, it is a great activity for you and your Labrador Retriever! Taking your Labrador running will provide them with great physical and mental exercise both for the both of you. Remember, the shorter the run and more frequent the runs are best for both of you. Prior to your runs, it's important to make sure your Labrador is in good health and that their nails are trimmed to prevent them from wearing too quickly on your run.
