Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are a highly trainable and intelligent breed of dog that belong to the Sporting Group. This group includes other highly popular retriever breeds, such as Golden Retrievers and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. By nature, Labrador Retrievers are a gentle breed that aims to please their owners. The breed is friendly, outgoing, and makes for an excellent companion. They also demonstrate a strong desire to work. Labrador Retrievers are highly versatile and can often be found in hunting, competing in agility trials or field competitions, and as service or therapy dogs.
No, Labrador Retrievers are not hypoallergenic. A hypoallergenic breed of dog is one with a lower likelihood of triggering an allergic reaction in people; however, no breed is 100% hypoallergenic. Most breeds with a reputation of being hypoallergenic have fur that grows in a single layer close to the body, fine, and silky; whereas Labradors have a double-coat with a coarse top-layer and a thick, downy undercoat.
Labrador Retrievers have a unique dietary requirement set for their particular breed, due to their higher energy level and their modern history as a sporting or hunting dog. This includes sources of Omega-3 fatty acids, which assist in their joint health, as well as antioxidants like Vitamin E or Vitamin C, which help bolster their immune system. It’s also necessary to feed your Labrador lean proteins, such as white-meat chicken, lean ground beef, or fish, as well as high-quality carbohydrates like brown rice, oats, and barley.
In addition to a supply of premium-quality dog food, toys, and treats, some other essentials to stock up on before bringing home your Labrador Retriever include a brush, nail trimmers, and fleece blankets for the dog bed. Other supplies to include are a leash, a collar and/or harness, and potty pads or an outdoor playpen with a doggy door. If you plan to walk your pup in the evening or morning, make sure to get a reflective lead so that others can see you.
The size of a Labrador Retriever puppy at maturity will vary depending on the individual dog's genetics and gender. On average, a male Labrador Retriever may reach up to 22.5 24.5 inches in height and 65-80 lbs in weight. Female Labradors are typically slightly smaller, reaching a height of 21.5 23.5 inches at the shoulder and averaging between 55-70 lbs in weight. As your pup grows, regular check-ups are recommended to ensure they're on track and tracking their normal growth rates for the breed.
Generally speaking, Labrador Retrievers need a moderate amount of exercise; however, exact needs will depend on the age of the dog, overall health, and individual temperament. In general, 10-20 minutes of exercise twice a day should be all that's requires, such as fetching a ball, going for a jog, or swimming. Regular exercise can help a Labrador Retriever maintain a healthy weight and also help them stay mentally stimulated. If possible, longer walks or trips to the park should be done a few times a week.

What's more, Labradors are highly intelligent and attentive, making them easy to train no matter your level of experience. They are a moderately active breed, making them well suited to owners of varying activity levels. Furthermore, with a reputation of being playful and affectionate, Labrador Retrievers are both easy to love and entertaining for their owners.
