Owners should be aware that Labradors are naturally very active and need plenty of physical and mental stimulation. Proper exercise is key to maintaining a calm and friendly demeanor in public settings. Additionally, Labradors can be quite food-oriented, so treats can be used as positive reinforcement when training.
Labrador Retrievers are not considered to be a non-shedding breed, but they do shed an average amount and therefore require regular grooming. Labradors often have a double coat, which can cause them to shed more than a single-coated breed. It is best to brush your Lab's coat at least once a week, and more often during periods of heavy shedding, to help remove the loose fur and reduce the amount of hair that gets left around your home.
