Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are incredibly popular because of their intelligence, loyalty and friendly personalities. They are the most popular breed of dog in the world and have held that title since 1991. Labs are used as guide dogs, therapy dogs, search-and-rescue dogs, drug-sniffing dogs, and for plenty of other purposes. Fun facts about them include the fact that their double-layered coat is specially designed to keep them warm, even when submerged in icy waters. They have webbed feet that help them swim and are great at retrieving objects.
Labrador Retrievers are generally considered to be good dogs for people with allergies and asthma, although they are not considered to be hypoallergenic. The American Kennel Club (AKC) states that while the Labrador Retriever has a low shedding coat, it will still release dander that some people may have a reaction to. It is best to choose a breed that is known for being hypoallergenic if you or somebody in your family has allergies or asthma.
Labrador Retrievers are an active breed and require a well-balanced, nutritious diet to keep them healthy and energized. A high-quality dry food is typically recommended, either from a reputable pet store or from your veterinarian. For your pup's meals, aim for two-thirds of the food to be carbohydrate-based such as grain, corn, or potato, and one-third to be protein-based, such as fish, poultry, or meat. It's also a good idea to monitor the amount you feed throughout the day to ensure your pup doesn't overeat.
Prepping your home for a new Labrador Retriever is a great way to get your pup elevated to their full potential. To best prepare your home, there are several things you can do. First, familiarize yourself with their breed's specific needs and create a routine that accommodates for those needs. Make sure to make room for their bed, toys and food dishes. It is important to identify areas in the house where they are allowed and those that are off limits when you can, use baby gates to keep them away or even keep the doors shut.
Labradors are a medium-sized breed of dog, though they can range from about 55 to 80 pounds. They usually stand about 21-25 inches at the shoulders, and their coats often come in three different colors: black, yellow, and chocolate. Some Labradors may have double coats and be a bit bulkier, while others may be more slender depending on the genetics of the dog. It's important to keep Labradors in shape with plenty of exercise and a nutritious diet to keep them healthy; they will always remain adorable & loyal, regardless of their size!
Labrador Retrievers are an active breed and to ensure their mental and physical wellbeing, should receive at least one to two hours of exercise per day. This exercise should be a combination of physical activity and playtime; walks, runs, fetch, agility, swimming, or even a game of hide and seek. Aside from their regular exercise sessions, it's important to provide your Lab with daily enrichment and mental stimulation, such as puzzle toys, training games, and other interactive activities.
Generally speaking, Labrador Retrievers are known for their friendly and outgoing personality, and they usually get along very well with other pets. They are great with other dogs and cats, as they are a very adaptable and social breed. However, as with any dog, proper introductions between different animals should always be done slowly and in a safe environment. Therefore, if introducing a Labrador Retriever and another pet, it's important to keep their interactions limited in the beginning and closely supervised.
Labrador Retrievers are undeniably intelligent, especially when it comes to working and responding to commands. Their short, dense coat makes them ideal for both society and work, and their clean, blocky bodies reflect an athletic form that is capable of hard work and robustness. Their ever-watchful eyes and attentive ears are perfect for detecting signs of danger that other dogs may not. Labrador Retrievers are also eager to please and easily trained, further adding to their smarts. They are incredibly loyal and thrive in family situations.
