Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds of family dogs, and are often chosen for their intelligence and loyalty. Often nicknamed "the love bug," they typically weigh between 55 80 pounds, and make wonderful family companions. Labradors are highly trainable and require regular physical and mental stimulation. They are enthusiastic learners and enjoy activities such as agility and obedience. Even though they are strong and active, they make excellent house pets. They require a high level of exercise, as a bored Labrador is likely to create problematic behaviors.
Labrador Retrievers are not considered to be non-shedding dogs. While they do not have a particularly long or heavy coat, they do shed throughout the year. Like most breeds, a Lab's shedding increases and decreases with the seasons--you are likely to find more fur in the house during the winter months and in the spring when their coat is changing out for the warmer weather. Regular brushing and grooming can help to reduce the amount of shedding and the amount of stray hairs in your home.
Labrador Retrievers require a premium dog food that is high in protein and contains healthy fats and carbohydrates to help support their energy needs. Consequently, the best food for Labradors should contain an abundance of natural ingredients including high-quality protein sources such as lamb, chicken, fish, beef or eggs. In addition, the food should have whole grains, vegetables and fruits to provide a balanced and nutritious meal. Look for food that is specifically formulated for Labrador Retrievers and has been approved by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO).
Before bringing home your new Labrador Retriever, you should prepare your home for its arrival. First, ensure that any hazardous items are well out of reach of your new pet, as Labs can have a tendency to chew and explore. Make sure to properly secure any electrical cords and provide plenty of chew toys for it to utilize instead. Establish a special spot for your pet, such as a crate or designated area, and place familiar items such as blankets and toys for them to feel comfortable in the space.
Labrador Retrievers are an athletic, medium-sized dog breed with an impressive build. Depending on their sex, Labradors typically grow to reach between 21.5 and 24.5 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 55 and 80 pounds. Males are typically larger than females. While they may not be a particularly large breed, Labradors have muscular, stocky bodies that can create an impression of greater size. They're an active breed of canine and may seem larger than they actually are due to their thick coat, which can make them appear bigger.
Labrador Retrievers have a well-deserved reputation of loving to swim. Not only is swimming great exercise for these active dogs, but their design—with their webbed toes and dense water-resistant coat—makes them natural swimmers. Labrador Retrievers often take to the water spontaneously, but it's important to start training them when they're young as they can become easily distracted as they age. Besides swimming, Labs love to paddle around, explore streams, chase toys, and retrieve objects from the water.
Labrador Retrievers are known to get along excellently with children and make wonderful family pets. They possess an amiable nature and are famously gentle around small children. This breed has an unwavering good-natured disposition that is patient and tolerant toward kids, and their even temper is more than accommodating. With proper training, they can learn to obey commands and take direction from family members, adding to their endearing nature. Labrador Retrievers are also playful and energetic dogs that love interaction, and this often encourages kids to take part in outdoor activities and exercise.
Labrador Retrievers are considered to be very intelligent dogs, one of the most intelligent breeds of canine in fact. Their eagerness to please, learn quickly and work hard makes them ideal candidates for many different types of work including assistance and therapy dogs, search and rescue teams, guide dogs and even police dogs. They have even passed the American Kennel Club's Canine Good Citizen test for obedience more frequently than other breeds. Labradors have been used for many years by hunters and farmers for their tracking and varied skills, which shows the innate intelligence the breed possesses.
