Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds around, and for good reason! Their intelligence and love for family make them an excellent companion. On top of that, they've been found to be extremely capable working dogs too. They have a wonderful ability to learn quickly with positive reinforcement, and can excel in numerous activities like therapy work, tracking, agility, or search-and-rescue. Plus, their friendly and sociable personalities make them a pleasure to be around.
Labrador Retrievers are considered to be a medium to heavy shedder, meaning they are not non-shedding. While individual difference may occur, these dogs usually shed on a seasonal basis and some may shed year-round. Owners of Labradors should anticipate some degree of shedding and plan accordingly. Regular brushing with a brush designed for dogs with a double coat such as a Labradors will help reduce the amount of loose hair in the environment as well as helping to keep the coat in optimal health. Other strategies such as occasional baths with a mild shampoo can also help reduce shedding.
Labrador Retrievers should not be given any kind of human food as their diet includes specific nutrients that can only be found in commercial dog food. Never give them cooked bones, as they can splinter and choke your dog, and avoid any "people food" like onions, garlic, raisins, coffee, grapes, and chocolate, as these can cause serious health problems. Additionally, it is wise to be careful when feeding your dog treats high in salt, fat or sugar.
Before getting a Labrador Retriever, it's important to make sure you're prepared to provide your pup with the necessities. Make sure you have a comfortable bed, chew toys, food and water bowls, a collar and leash, treats and training supplies, grooming items, and most importantly, lots of love. You'll also want to look into finding a reliable vet and schedule regular checkups. It's also important to create a safe, secure environment for your pup with a secure, enclosed yard surrounded by a properly installed fence.
Labradors are widely considered to be considered big dogs. This could be measured in terms of the typical size and weight associated with the breed, or by how much space the pup requires when fully grown. It might be surprising to note that Labradors can sometimes reach up to 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh up to 80 pounds depending on the gender. Labradors may look sizable when compared to some other small breeds, but they can also hold their own against many of the larger breeds too, such as the Mastiff and the Great Dane.
Labrador Retrievers are active breeds that require plenty of exercise to stay healthy and happy. A good amount of daily exercise for them would be at least 60 minutes a day. This could include walks, runs, playtime, and other activities. If possible, giving them access to a secure, fenced yard for them to play in would be beneficial. Exercise is important for Labrador Retrievers as it helps them stay in good mental and physical shape. Not having enough exercise can often lead to destructive behaviors such as digging, chewing, and barking.
Labrador Retrievers make excellent pets for first-time owners. They are friendly and affectionate, making them both rewarding and easy to care for. Their eager-to-please nature makes them highly trainable, and their even temperament makes them great with children and other pets. As an added bonus, Labradors tend to require significantly less energy and exercise than many other breeds, making them a good choice for owners who may not lead an especially active lifestyle.
Absolutely. Labrador Retrievers are generally claimed to be among the brightest breeds of canine and are ranked highly in the doggie intelligence scale. They are very obedient and eager to please, making them easy to train and are great family dogs. They are known to be robust, loyal, intelligent, and friendly, as well as being great working dogs. They possess the ability to memorize and understand instructions quickly, making them one of the most popular breeds for police and military work. They also boast remarkable abilities to sense their owners’ needs and feelings.
