Questions & Answers
Did you know that Labrador Retrievers possess a specific type of coat, referred to as the 'otter tail' that enables them to be natural swimmers? Their water-resistant, double coat also provides them with extreme warmth and comfort. Not only does the breed have webbed toes, but their tails also act like a rudder; helping them to keep their balance and steer them in the water. Furthermore, they have a built-in ‘Lifesaver Instinct’, which prompts them to instinctively jump in and save the day should they observe someone in trouble.
The Labrador Retriever's coat is unique among dog breeds; it has a double coat that is both short and coarse and consists of an outer "guard coat" of short, straight hairs and an inner "down" coat of fuzzy, woolly hairs. With its combination of attributes, the Labrador Retriever's coat is water proof and weather resistant, protecting it from the harsh elements as well as the sun's rays. The colors of the Labrador Retriever's coat can range from yellow to black and even (a much rarer occurrence) a beautiful silver-gray.
Labrador Retrievers need a balanced diet that includes a variety of whole foods such as lean proteins, fruits, vegetables, complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and minerals. The best way to ensure your Labrador Retriever is getting all the nutrients it needs is to feed a high quality commercial dry dog food. However, if you would like to supplement your dog's diet you can provide your pet with cooked or raw meats, eggs, carrots, apples, spinach, sweet potatoes, yogurt, salmon, and other fish. Make sure to always consult your veterinarian about the proper quantity and appropriate foods for your pet.
Before bringing home your new Labrador Retriever, it's important to make sure your home is prepared. Take some time to puppy-proof your living space by placing dangerous items such as cleaning products and medications out of reach, and making sure there are no small objects lying around that the puppy might be tempted to chew on. Additionally, it's important to set up a safe and comfortable space for your new pup, including items like a bed, food and water bowls, and safe chew toys.
Labrador Retrievers are often considered big dogs, as they are typically medium to large-sized breeds. On average, Labrador Retrievers measure 21-25 inches in height and weigh 55-80 pounds. While there are always outliers, these measurements represent most Labrador Retrievers, thus categorizing them generally as a bigger breed of dog. This doesn’t mean that Labradors take up a lot of room, as they are very agile and move about easily.
Labrador Retrievers need a significant amount of exercise and mental stimulation, preferably 30 to 45 minutes of activity at least 2 times per day. While some of this should be structured in the form of walks, fetch, and other types of activity, it's just as important to provide an opportunity for your Labrador Retriever to explore its environment and use its brain. Some fun activities that suitable for your Lab include agility, swimming, hiking, hide-and-seek, detection competitions, and playing fetch games like Flyball.
Labrador Retrievers can be a great choice for first-time owners! They are an intelligent, loyal, and friendly breed that can bring a lot of joy to a home. Labs are relatively easy to train and make excellent family pets. They typically get along well with other pets and are known as one of the most good-natured breeds. With proper socialization, they can make great additions to any home. Labrador Retrievers may require more exercise than some other breeds, so make sure you have the time and energy to provide them with daily walks and active play time.
Training your Labrador Retriever can be done using positive reinforcement techniques. Start by using treats and verbal or physical praise when your dog performs certain commands or tricks. You can also use clickers to help with the association of a command and reward. As you progress, reduce the treats and increase the praise to promote the desired behavior. When teaching your Labrador new commands or tricks, keep your training session brief – no more than 10-15 minutes – and keep it fun. Incorporate playtime and breaks in between to avoid tiring or overwhelming your pet.
