Labrador Retrievers are part of the Sporting Group of dogs. They are a medium-to-large breed known for their friendly, loving and laid-back personalities. Labrador Retrievers are also remarkably intelligent, making them skilled working dogs, and are easily trainable for a number of different purposes. Their size suit well for most living arrangements, from houses to apartments. Labs have been a favorite for decades due to their trainability, companionship and willingness to please. As a result, they've become one of the most popular breeds in the world.
The Labrador Retriever is known for its glossy and smooth coat which ranges from straight to wavy in texture but not too thick or wooly. Most Labrador Retrievers boast a beautiful 'chocolate' colored coat or one of yellow or black. This coat is short to medium-length and is quite water-resistant. Labradors may have a thicker coat in winter, but are usually sleek and short all year round. The coat also has a natural weather guard, protecting the dog from colder temperatures or extreme elements.
Labrador Retrievers should not be fed avocados, chocolate, macadamia nuts, alcohol, mushrooms, onions, raisins, and grapes. Foods high in fat, such as french fries and other fried foods, should also be avoided; they can cause pancreatitis in your pup. This can be accomplished through positive reinforcement when introducing something new, providing a comfortable space that it can call its own, or enrolling in obedience classes.
Labrador Retrievers come in three regular sizes, which are classified as Standard, Miniature, and Toy. The Standard size is the largest and tends to weigh between 55 and 80 pounds. The Miniature size is slightly smaller and typically weighs between 30 and 50 pounds. Finally, the Toy size is the smallest and usually weighs between 10 and 20 pounds. Though there are other variations depending on the individual breeders, these are the most commonly accepted sizes for Labrador Retrievers. Additionally, Labradors can come in many different colors, such as yellow, black, and chocolate.
Generally speaking, Labradors require at least 45 minutes of exercise per day, making walking the perfect way to provide them with this daily activity. To make sure you are both getting the most out of your walks, aim to go for about 30 minutes at a time twice a day. A longer duration and/or more frequent walking can be beneficial for your Labrador’s physical and mental health, but take the needed precautions such as keeping an eye on the weather and bringing plenty of water in case the walks last longer.
