Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are an incredible breed that have an amazing range of unique characteristics. Did you know that Labradors are the most popular dog breed in the world? Not only are they renowned for their intelligence and trainability, but their incredible loyalty and quality of life makes them a top choice for many dog owners. Additionally, even though they come in shades of yellow, black, or brown, each color is considered the same temperamentally and in breed designations. Furthermore, Labs are also renowned for their remarkable swimming abilities.
While many people believe that Labrador Retrievers are hypoallergenic because of their short hair, unfortunately this isn't the case. Labs are considered to be a moderate shedding breed and they produce dander much like any other furry family pet. As with all shedding animal companions, regular brushing will help keep dander and shedding under control, as well as helping to reduce the amount of allergens in your home. If you are allergic to pets, a hypoallergenic breed might be better suited for you.
Labrador Retrievers need a diet that is full of high-quality, nutrient-rich ingredients. To ensure your retriever is healthy, their diet should include a combination of lean proteins, like fish, eggs, poultry, and lamb; complex carbohydrates, such as brown rice, wheat, oatmeal, and barley; and a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables for vitamins and minerals. It's also important to use quality dog food that does not contain artificial preservatives, colors, flavors, fillers and by-products.
Necessary items to purchase in preparation for bringing a Labrador Retriever into your home include food and water bowls, a comfortable dog bed, a collar or harness, a lead and collar tags, safe chew toys, a grooming brush, dog shampoo, treats, waste bags, and a puppy shampoo. Additionally, it's a good idea to get a crate or playpen to provide your pup with a safe space while they learn how to become a house-trained member of the family.
Labrador Retrievers come in three sizes, Standard, Medium, and Miniature. The Standard Labrador Retrievers, or "Labs", reach anywhere between 22 to 24 inches in height and weigh up to 75 pounds. Medium-sized Labs will be between 21 and 23 inches tall and weigh up to 55 pounds. Finally, the Miniature Labrador Retrievers, or "Mini Labradors" reach around 18 20 inches in height and weigh up to 32 pounds.
Labrador Retrievers need at least 1-2 hours of exercise per day, depending on their individual temperament and needs. As working dogs, Labradors have plenty of energy and need plenty of physical and mental stimulation. Taking your Labrador on regular walks, romps in the backyard, or doggie play dates can help to alleviate any destructive behaviors, such as chewing, barking, or digging.
Labrador Retrievers are known for being a friendly and loyal breed, so generally they get along well with other pets. They may need to be trained and socialized properly, however, to ensure that they are comfortable with other animals. Labradors are loyal and will typically want to be part of the pack with any other animals in the house, so with proper training and socialization, they usually integrate well with cats, birds, and other small animals.
Training a Labrador Retriever requires a commitment of your time and energy. The amount of time you should dedicate to this endeavour is highly dependent on your goals and objectives. Generally speaking, your Labrador Retriever should participate in structured training sessions for a minimum of 30 minutes per day. This time should focus on obedience and behavior training. Additionally, it is recommended to provide your Labrador Retriever with at least 30 to 45 minutes of physical activity via walking, running, swimming or playing daily to ensure the dog stays fit, healthy, and happy.
