Questions & Answers
One of the most interesting things about Labrador Retrievers is their incredibly loyal and loving natures. Labs are known to be incredibly devoted to their family and make fabulous house pets. They are known for their high intelligence too, which makes them a great choice for service dogs, and easy to train. Labs are also relatively energetic and can be a great companion for active people or families who need a canine playmate. Best of all, they just love to please their owners so they only need a few commands and simple rewards to make learning exciting.
While some dog breeds, like poodles, are considered non-shedding, Labrador Retrievers are not in that group. As a medium-sized breed with dense double coats, they do have moderate to heavy seasonal shedding. Although brushing and other grooming activities can help reduce the amount of shedding, it will not completely eliminate it. So, even with regular maintenance Labradors will still shed some fur throughout the year.
Labrador Retrievers should not be fed chocolate or caffeine, as both of these can prove to be toxic. They should also not be fed grapes, raisins, onions, garlic, avocados, or macadamia nuts as they can cause digestive upset or other health issues. Labradors should also not be given any kind of processed food as these can be high in unhealthy additives and low in essential nutrients necessary for healthy growth and development. Additionally, Labradors should not be given any bones, as this can lead to safety hazards, such as choking or digestion blockages.
First and foremost, it's important to be patient, kind, and consistent while raising your Labrador Retriever! Show them plenty of love and manage limits and boundaries to create a safe and structured environment. Make sure your pup is up-to-date with all their necessary veterinary care, including a regular check-up and vaccinations. Taking your pup to puppy class or a professional obedience class can also help to socialize them and teach them basic cues to ensure they’re a good canine citizen.
No, Labrador Retrievers are not considered small dogs. These athletic, active and highly intelligent canine companions typically reach heights of 22.5 to 24.5 inches and weigh 55 to 80 pounds. That being said, Labs can be surprisingly gentle, making them good family pets as well as active and even devoted service dogs. Despite their large size, they require daily exercise and a lot of mental stimulation, giving them an energetic personality and plenty of enthusiasm. With so much power and energy, Labs are not your typical small dog breed.
It is recommended that adult Labrador Retrievers get at least one hour of physical activity every day, including walking. This amount of physical activity should be split up into several shorter walks to provide the best exercise for your dog. Each walk should last at least 20 minutes and should involve a slow but steady pace. This will give your Lab the satisfaction of completing a task and ensure that they're getting the exercise and mental stimulation they need. Walking more than one hour a day can provide additional benefits for your pet, such as increased muscle tone, enhanced socialization, and improved mental health.
Labrador Retrievers generally make fantastic family pets, and have a natural affinity for children. They are very gentle, sweet-natured dogs that typically love to be around kids and like nothing more than a cuddle and some playtime. Not only are Labradors great in size and able to keep up with outdoor play, but they are also known for their intelligence and are highly trainable — making them a great choice for families. Additionally, their friendly and loyal, non-aggressive demeanor make them easy to manage around kids.
Training a Labrador Retriever is not always easy, but also not impossible. The biggest factor in successful training is the trainer's dedication to consistency, patience and positive reinforcement. Labradors are very intelligent, so they learn quickly, which makes the training process much smoother. They also respond well to clear commands and positive reinforcement. However, they also need regular exercise, mental stimulation, and exposure to different environments and people to maintain their physical and mental health. A good start is to begin basic obedience training and socialization, and continue to build upon that.
