A Labrador Retriever is a beloved family pet that originated in Newfoundland, Canada. They are strong, hardworking, and highly-intelligent dogs that thrive in a family home environment. Labradors stand up to 23 inches tall at the shoulder and males weigh up to 80 pounds while females are smaller and reach about 65 pounds. Labradors have a beautiful short coat available in three colors: black, brown or yellow. They are known for their friendly, affectionate personality making them one of the most popular breeds of dogs.
The Labrador Retriever breed has a short-haired, weather-resistant coat that is easy to maintain. Their dense coat helps keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer, plus it provides them with a natural protection from the elements. Their coat can usually be described as a dense, water-resistant outer coat blended with a soft and thick downy undercoat. Their colors typically include yellow, black, and chocolate, with each variation having a slightly different sheen. They shed frequently, and do need a good brushing and regular baths to keep their coat healthy.
Labradors are a large breed that require nutrition-rich foods; one with the right amount of protein, fat, and carbohydrates. Many dog foods can be beneficial for these retrievers, but the safety and quality of the food should always be your highest priority. Puppy-proof your home by making sure anything dangerous or fragile is safely tucked away and out of reach breakables, hazardous items, chemicals, small objects, and cords. Set up a designated area for them to sleep. Put a water and food bowl in an easy to access spot. Consider setting up a closed off area of your home for your Dog to easily access, like a puppy pen or a crate. Establish rules and start training your pup right away.
Labrador Retrievers come in three sizes: standard, miniature and toy. The standard size usually ranges between 21.5-24.5 inches and weighs between 55-80 pounds. A miniature Lab would be 17-20 inches tall and would weigh between 25-50 pounds. Toy Labrador Retrievers typically measure 14-17 inches in height and 15-25 pounds in weight. The size of a Labrador Retriever often depends upon its lineage and the purpose for which it was bred.
Generally speaking, an adult Labrador Retriever should get at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise per day. You may choose to divide that time into two or more walks to accommodate you and your pup’s schedules. If your Labrador is younger than a year, it is still developing muscle and bones, and should be walked for only 15 minutes per day, increasing the time as the pup matures. Additionally, consider providing enrichment activities during the day, such as hiding treats or playing interactive games that provide mental and physical stimulation.
