Questions & Answers
Likely the most interesting thing about Labrador Retrievers is their tremendous loyalty which has earned them the moniker "man's best friend". Originating from the coastal regions of Newfoundland in the late 1700s, they were initially bred as a hard-working retriever of small game due to their natural swimming and retrieving abilities. Even since, their playfulness, intelligence, and desire to please their owners have made them one of the most popular breeds of all time and a favorite among families around the world.
Labrador Retrievers are known for their thick double-coated fur for which they are easily recognizable. The undercoat is typically soft, dense and short, and the outer coat is made of straight, short, and water resistant guard hairs. This structure makes the coat resilient and particularly useful in protecting against cold and wet environments. The coat of a Labrador Retriever also typically sheds seasonally and requires brushing regularly to avoid matting and tangling.
Labrador Retrievers should not be fed large amounts of onions, garlic, grapes or raisins, and chocolate are toxic to dogs. Additionally, it's important to not feed your Labrador Retriever any food that is inappropriate for their age; such as, feeding puppy food to an adult dog or adult food to a puppy. Table food, as tasty as it may be, can also be unhealthy for your Lab, as too much fat and carbohydrates can be hard on their digestive systems and lead to obesity. It's important to avoid giving raw or undercooked meat and eggs.
Preparing your home for your new Labrador Retriever starts with making sure your pet's needs are met. Create a designated area for your pup to eat, sleep and play. This can be a designated room or a special area in the living room or bedroom. Stock up on food, treats, toys, bedding and a leash and collar. Provide a space for your pup to rest, like a comfy bed that’s easily washable to incentivize relaxing.
Labrador Retrievers, often referred to simply as Labs, are a large breed of dog. On average, male Labs will be between 21 to 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 65 and 80 pounds, while females will average between 20 to 23 inches tall and weigh between 55 to 70 pounds. Of course, weight and size can vary from one Lab to the next, and the final size of any adult Labrador Retriever will depend on a variety of factors including diet, exercise, and genetics. Generally speaking, however, Labradors are one of the larger breeds of dog.
When it comes to the amount of daily exercise for a Labrador Retriever, the general recommendation is around two hours per day. This should be broken up into shorter walks totaling at least 30 minutes per day. This, of course, depends on the age, health, and size of the Lab. As with any breed of dog, you want to get them out and be active, but you should not over-exercise them. Additionally, aim for multiple short walks throughout the day for a total of 30-60 minutes.
Yes, Labrador Retrievers can definitely make great pets for first-time owners. They are active, intelligent, and loyal to their human family. Labradors have a reputation for being good-natured, and their pleasant personalities make them good candidates for people who are just starting out in pet ownership. They are easy to train, and they enjoy being around people and participating in activities like swimming, running, and playing. As a plus, Labradors come in a variety of different colors, so it's easy to find one that will fit in with your lifestyle.
Absolutely! Labrador Retrievers are considered to be one of the most intelligent breeds of dog. Ranked among the top 10 breeds for both obedience and working intelligence, Labradors consistently rank as the most popular breed in the United States. Because of their intelligence, they have the ability to learn new tasks quickly, making them well suited for a variety of activities. From the games they play to the assistance they can offer to the elderly, Labradors are incredibly smart dogs that have won the hearts of many owners.
