Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are one of the most beloved breeds of dog, and there are lots of fun facts about them worth knowing! These dogs were originally bred in Newfoundland, Canada by a British dog breeder as sporting dogs for hunting and fishing. Their two most distinguished physical traits are their thick, water-resistant coats and tightly webbed paws that help them navigate through the water. Labs are also incredibly intelligent and have a strong desire to please their owners. This makes them very easy to train and extremely loyal they are often used as service dogs or police dogs.
Labrador Retrievers are not considered completely hypoallergenic since they do shed their fur. However, their light fluffy fur and short hair make them relatively allergen-resistant compared to other breeds. If you are allergic to dogs, it is always important to do some research and spend time with the breed before making a decision. Even though a Labrador Retriever is low-shedding and produces very little dander, there is still a chance that some allergies could be triggered.
Labrador Retrievers are working animals and have tremendously large appetites that need to be fulfilled. As such, a Labrador Retriever should be fed a wholesome, balanced diet. It should contain enough protein, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids to sustain a healthy lifestyle. Dry food is the most appropriate diet for Labrador Retrievers as it contains an appropriate combination of both kibble and natural ingredients such as vegetables, fruits, and meats. Wet food or canned food may also be given occasionally as a treat or for those with sensitive teeth.

Labrador Retrievers are generally considered to be medium-sized dogs. While they may seem small as puppies, they can grow to an average height of 20-24 inches and weigh from 55 to 80 pounds usually much larger than small dogs. Labradors are very friendly and loyal, making them a great companion in the home. They are also incredibly intelligent and enjoy learning new tasks and challenges, which keeps them entertained and engaged. Because of their size and energetic nature, they do require plenty of exercise and activities to keep them healthy and happy.
Labrador Retrievers need regular exercise to stay healthy with sufficient physical and mental stimulation. Most recommend at least an hour each day of exercise such as walks, runs, or playtime. When given the right amount of physical activity, they can live healthier and longer lives. Walks should be supplemented with activities like running and swimming as these activities provide an intense aerobic workout that hits all muscle groups. Furthermore, regular physical activity can help keep Labradors from getting bored or acting out in destructively due to boredom. Also, adequate exercise helps them to maintain their weight and maintain good cardiovascular health.
Labrador Retrievers are generally known for being kind, intelligent, and gentle, making them great playmates for kids. Most will patiently and kindly accept being hugged or handled roughly, as they are accustomed to being around children. Due to their affectionate and friendly nature, Labradors adjust quickly to becoming part of a family with children and are often capable of forming strong bonds. These dogs are also quite gentle around babies, as they have a great ability to sense which behaviour is appropriate.
Training your Labrador Retriever requires patience, consistency and positive reinforcement. Start out small with basic commands such as "sit," "stay," "come," and "off" using rewards like treats or verbal praise whenever your Lab follows the commands. Once they learn the basics, you may want to move on to more advanced behaviors like potty training, retrieving objects, or heel walking. Be sure to have a calm, pleasant atmosphere when training and break the training session into shorter intervals with plenty of play breaks.
