Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are members of the Sporting Group in the American Kennel Club and are widely renowned for their athleticism, intelligence, and great sense of humor. Originally bred to help hunters retrieve game, they still have an instinctive love of water, strong legs for swimming, and a special pad on their toes that gives them added strength when treading water. Labradors are strong-willed and have an independent streak, yet they remain loyal and love being surrounded by their family. They are often outgoing and friendly, making them great companions to children and other animals.
Although Labrador Retrievers have a hypoallergenic coat, they are not considered to be completely hypoallergenic. These dogs produce allergens within their fur, as well as producing proteins that can cause allergic reactions in some people. These proteins are found in the saliva, dander, and urine of Labs, as well as the fur. It is important to know that no breed of dog is 100 percent hypoallergenic, but some breeds, such as Labradors, produce fewer allergens.
Labrador Retrievers should never be given foods that are high in fat, sugar, or artificial ingredients as they can cause health problems, such as obesity, digestive issues, and health issues in their later years. Vegetables should also be avoided, as Labrador Retrievers lack the enzymes necessary to break them down. Additionally, table scraps may contain preservatives, spices, or oils that can be toxic to the Labrador Retriever.
To become the best puppy parent for your Labrador Retriever, you should start by understanding the needs of the specific breed. Labs are energetic and need regular exercise and plenty of play in order to be happy and healthy. Be sure to research the nutritional needs of a Labrador and provide a balanced diet formulated for their age and activity level. Make sure to establish daily routine and provide your pup with clear expectations. Additionally, be consistent with setting boundaries, so your puppy can learn proper behaviors. Socialize your puppy early to form positive relationships and help them manage new and potentially stressful situations.
Labrador Retrievers have great variation in size and can range from around 45–90+ lbs depending on the sex of the puppy, it's parents, and other family genetics. On average, a male will be larger than a female. Generally, adult males are around 65–75 lbs and adult females are usually 55–70 lbs. Puppies tend to double in size by 6 months in age and will reach almost full size by 18 months but may still continue to gain weight up to 2–3 years.
Walking a Labrador Retriever is an important part of exercising them and maintaining their physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Generally, it is recommended that Labradors receive a minimum of an hour of exercise per day, which can be divided into a number of different activities such as walking, running, or playing outdoors. For the walking component, you should aim for at least 30 minutes a day, with 10 to 15-minute increments at multiple times throughout the day. It is important to monitor the intensity of the walking sessions, as it should be challenging but not overly strenuous for your pup.
Generally, Labrador Retrievers are known to be excellent pets for families with other animals. They are a loyal and friendly breed that can get along with just about any animal in the home. They have a wonderful temperament and usually get along well with other animals, even cats. With proper socialization and training, Labrador Retrievers can become an ideal companion animal for households with multiple pets. These dogs are also very energetic and will enjoy running and playing with everyone in the home, whether it’s another household pet or a human companion.
Labrador Retrievers are among the most intelligent dog breeds, and are notably very easy to train. They have a strong eagerness to please and are highly trainable, which makes them a great choice for owners who want a loyal, obedient, and well-behaved pet. Labradors typically excel in many different kinds of dog sports, such as agility, and they can be taught a variety of commands, which makes them great companions. These dogs are also incredibly loving and loyal, and tend to form close and unique bonds with their owners.
