Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are intelligent, playful, and loyal dogs, and there are some interesting facts about them that you may not have known. From a young age, Labradors are natural swimmers, and their oily coats act like isolators in the water, preventing them from suffering from hypothermia. They also have an awesome sense of smell, and because of this, they are often used in search and rescue operations for hikers and missing persons. Labrador Retrievers are very versatile and can excel in a number of disciplines like agility, competitive obedience, hunting, herding and more.
Managing allergies with Labrador Retrievers can be managed by monitoring your exposure to the pet's dander. This can be done by bathing the pet regularly, grooming and brushing it outside of the house, and cleaning the home and furniture regularly. Additionally, keeping the pet away from any sleeping areas will also reduce dander in the home and help reduce allergic reactions. It may also be beneficial to use air filters to reduce the amount of pet dander circulating in the house. Taking other preventative measures, such as getting a non-allergenic pet bed, may help as well.
Labrador Retrievers should not be fed a diet high in fat since it can lead to health issues such as pancreatitis and obesity. You should also avoid rawhide and bones as these can splinter and cause gastrointestinal problems. Feeding table scraps should also be avoided as Labrador Retrievers do not need the added calories and it can increase the risk of obesity. Foods containing high levels of artificial preservatives and dyes can also be harmful to a Labrador's health. Even food that is safe for human consumption may not be suitable for a Labrador Retriever.
Before bringing home a Labrador Retriever, it's a good idea to make sure you have the necessary items to care for your pup. Purchase food and water bowls, a collar and/or harness, a bed, chew toys, and other interactive toys. Your pup will also need a leash for walks and a crate or dog pen for sleep and safety. You'll also want to have grooming supplies, like a brush, shampoo, and nail clippers, and flea and tick preventative.
Labrador Retrievers generally have an adult size ranging between 22 to 25 inches high and 55 to 80 pounds for males and 50 to 70 pounds for females. This breed is also known for being a well-rounded companion with an eagerness to please and an outgoing personality. Regardless of their size, Labradors are known for their intelligence, energy, and kind naturedness. Their coats come in three varieties – smooth, medium, or rough – and pleasant colors such as black, yellow, chocolate brown, or white (usually there’s white in the mix).
Absolutely! Labrador Retrievers are well-known for their love of swimming, and particular enjoy splashing around in bodies of water. In fact, it is thought that this breed was bred in the 1800s for the very purpose of helping fishermen. Labradors have strong webbed feet, making them natural swimmers. They are incredibly adept at hunting in the water and enjoy spending time with their owners playing fetch in the pool or lake. Consequently, they make great companions for outdoor activities such as diving, canoeing or fishing, where you can take your furry friend along for the ride.
Labrador Retrievers are a great choice for families with children because they are often naturally gentle and tolerant. Labs also make exceptionally loyal and loving companions that are eager to please. Not only are these dogs gentle, easy to train, and highly intelligent; they are also very friendly and love interacting with people. They are by nature very patient dogs, which is important when children are involved. Every Lab is different, but with correct training, supervision and guidance, these breeds make wonderful family pets.
Training a Labrador Retriever can be a rewarding experience for many owners, however, it is not an endeavor to be taken lightly. While these dogs are known for being smart, loyal, and even-tempered, they can also become easily bored, requiring patience and dedication in order to help ensure successful results. Having a clear understanding of the basics of dog training, along with ensuring your time, energy, and resources are allocated accordingly, can certainly help make the task of training easier.
