Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are among the most popular and beloved dog breeds in the United States for many reasons. They are generally friendly and loyal animals that make excellent family pets that will stay by their owner's side. Labradors enjoy multiple activities, such as swimming, fetch, and running, so make sure to keep them active with regular exercise. Labradors should be fed a balanced diet tailored to their individual needs. Grooming should be done regularly and include a bath and brushing of their coat.
The Labrador Retriever has a double coat; their outer coat is comprised of short, straight hairs that repel water, while their undercoat is made up of softer, insulating, short hairs. Fur on their back, neck, and chest is longer than the rest, and brushes forward, hanging between its shoulders when the dog is standing. All colors are acceptable, ranging from black, yellow, and red to chocolate, fox red, and cream.
Labrador Retrievers are known for their appetite and they enjoy a variety of meals. Their diet should include a variety of proteins, such as lean meat, eggs, and dairy products like cottage cheese. Fats are also necessary for a Lab's health; fatty fish like salmon, and canola or olive oil are good sources. Carbohydrates provide energy and should come from unprocessed grains and vegetables. Additional vitamins and minerals should also be added in order to ensure your Lab is getting the proper nutrition.
Before bringing home a new Labrador Retriever, it is essential to purchase the necessary items to ensure your pet has the best start possible. You should start by getting a crate, food and water bowls, high-quality food, puppy training pads, puppy chew toys, a collar and leash, a shower head attachment for bathing, a brush and comb, treats, and pet identification tags. It's also a good idea to have pet stain removal products, a pet shampoo, and cleaning products to keep your home in good shape.
Labrador Retrievers typically come in two possible sizes, Standard and Miniature. Standard Labradors will typically grow to be between 21.5 to 24.5 inches tall when measured at the shoulder, and generally weigh between 55 to 80 pounds. Miniature Labradors, on the other hand, will typically measure in at 17 to 20 inches in height and typically weigh between 28 to 42 pounds. Though both breeds will carry the same dominant breed characteristics, their size difference will be readily apparent.
The amount of time that you should walk your Labrador Retriever per day will depend on the age and activity level of your pet. Generally, a healthy adult Labrador Retriever should get about 30 minutes of exercise per day. This can include a walk, a jog, or a game of fetch. Puppies on the other hand need more regular exercise to help them develop their muscles and joints which can mean up to two hours of walking per day. If your Retriever is overweight, you should aim for 45-60 minutes of exercise per day.
Labrador Retrievers are known to be incredibly friendly and affectionate around children, and make wonderful family pets. They seek out children, often going out of their way to make sure they have their attention, and are patient, kind, and tolerant with kids. They are also intelligent enough to understand the natural difference in size and strength between them and a child and are protective of kids at times. Labrador Retrievers will shower their young companions with love and make the perfect playmate. With plenty of patience, consistency, and love, they make outstanding members of the family.
The best way to train your Labrador Retriever is to focus on positive reinforcement. Start with basic commands like "sit" or "stay," and give your pup treats or a pat on the head when they obey. Gradually add more difficult commands, such as retrieving items or "shake hands," and use plenty of praise when they complete a task successfully. Be consistent with your rules and approaches; establish a routine and reward your pup when they respect it.
