Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are a medium-sized, sturdy breed known for being intelligent, friendly, and outgoing. They thrive on human companionship and love to be included in family activities. Activity level can vary significantly from one Labrador Retriever to another, but in general, they require plenty of daily exercise, mental stimulation, and socialization. Labradors are also naturally developed for swimming and retrieving, so they tend to be great candidates for dog sports like agility, dock diving, and flyball.
The Labrador Retriever has a short, thick coat that is about the same length all over. It is usually a solid color, commonly black, chocolate brown and yellow. However, some Labradors can have lighter shades of these colors, as well. The coat has an oily texture, which helps to protect the Labrador from water and other elements. The coat is very easy to care for, needing only the occasional brushing and bath, making it a great low-maintenance pet.
You should not give Labrador Retrievers anything that contains dairy, chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, alcohol, coffee, tea, macadamia nuts, or xylitol. Labradors should only be given non-fat treats such as carrots, apples, green beans, and bananas. Make sure the treat is in small pieces so it does not choke or cause intestinal blockage.
Preparing your home for your new Labrador Retriever will involve ensuring that your home is safe and comfortable for this new addition to the family. Firstly, purchase any necessary supplies such as a crate, bedding, toys, food bowls, and a leash. Also consider puppy-proofing your home by securing anything a curious pup may try to chew on or get into. Make sure that any dangerous objects or toxins are out of reach, such as wires, tools, and cleaning supplies. Once all supplies are in place, begin obedience training with your pup.
Labrador Retrievers come in three standard sizes: small (or “mini”), medium, and large. Small Labradors weigh between 20-40 pounds, medium Labradors between 4570 lbs., and large Labradors over 70lbs. The American Kennel Club and the United Kennel Club both provide specific guidelines when recognizing sizes in these dogs. The smaller variety is also sometimes referred to as a “Field Lab” and they are typically seen working in the bird fields. Their medium size, however, is most common.
Labrador Retrievers have an innate tendency to love water and swimming. These friendly, smart and loyal pooches tend to have a natural affinity towards swimming. Besides being a great form of exercise for Labradors, swimming is an activity that creates great bonds between Labradors and their owners and a way for them to stay cool during hot summer days. Labradors excel in swimming and are often used as service dogs in water-based activities. Swimming is a great way for Labradors to have fun while exercising without putting any extra stress on their joints.
Yes, Labrador Retrievers are generally excellent companions for children of all ages. They are loving, gentle, and affectionate, and they have been known to form strong bonds with family members, especially the children. Labs are highly trainable and intelligent, so they can often be taught to respond to basic commands and entertain or interact with children in a controlled and safe manner. The breed also is known for its calming and patient attitude, making them a great choice for families with young children.
The amount of time needed to train Labrador Retrievers each day depends greatly on their individual personalities and trainability. Generally speaking, though, a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes per day is recommended. This time should be spent carrying out basic commands such as 'sit', 'stay', and 'come' in various locations and surrounding, as well as basic obedience work. With consistency and patience, your Labrador Retriever can become well-trained in 6 to 8 months, provided the same training principles and methods are followed.
