Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds of dog in the United States. Not only are they supremely friendly, but they have remarkable brains and a great deal of stamina.
Labrador Retrievers are not typically considered to be hypoallergenic. This is because the breed does shed fur which can lead to allergic reactions. Additionally, the breed is notorious for producing copious amounts of saliva, which can also cause allergic reactions in some people. However, it is important to note that there are no perfectly hypoallergenic breeds. All dogs, regardless of the breed, have the potential to produce allergens that can lead to an allergic reaction in some individuals.
When considering what to feed Labrador Retrievers it is important to avoid giving them food that could harm their health or digestion. Research recommended diets to ensure you are not inadvertently giving your dog food that has too much fat, protein, sugar, salt, or other nutrients. In addition, common human food such as chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes and raisins, and macadamia nuts should all be avoided as they can be very dangerous for dogs. Make sure to never feed your dog bones, as they can become lodged in their esophagus or cause other health concerns.
Before getting a Labrador Retriever, make sure to get the essential items that any new pet owner should have! It is important to have plenty of food and water bowls, a leash and collar, toys and treats (to keep them active!), a dog bed, and a brush. You should also create a safe, comfortable space for your new canine companion within your home, by getting a puppy-proofed crate and an area rug to protect your floors. Additionally, consider enrolling them in obedience classes to start off on the right paw, and prepare for regular vet check-ups.
Labradors are not considered small dogs. In fact, they are classified by the American Kennel Club as medium-sized dogs, weighing anywhere from 55-80 pounds for males and females respectively. They are usually between 21.5-24.5 inches tall as well, making them quite a bit larger than small breeds, such as Pomeranians. Generally speaking, Labradors are best noted for their overall athleticism and life-long enthusiasm. Plus, they are also friendly, easily house-trained, and quite affectionate.
Absolutely! Exercising with your Labrador Retriever can be a wonderful experience for both of you. Before taking your pup running, be sure to ask your vet what the best exercise plan is for your specific pup. Also, remember to start slowly building up to longer distances. Training for a 5k with your Labrador Retriever can be a rewarding experience as your pup gets plenty of exercise and builds a strong bond with you. During the summer or hot days, it's important to be mindful of the weather as heat can be dangerous for your pup.
Labrador Retrievers are known to be incredibly friendly and great with children. Their friendly, even-tempered nature makes them well-suited to living in a family household, and they have a strong desire to please their owners. Following their gentle nature, Labs make great playmates for children and tend to get along well with them. Not to mention, they provide unconditional love and loyalty. Furthermore, these pooches are often used as service dogs and therapy dogs, so they are trusted in homes with children.
Training your Labrador Retriever is an extremely important part of developing and maintaining a good relationship with them. The best way to train your Labrador Retriever is with plenty of positive reinforcement. Reward them generously whenever they follow commands or show behaviors that you want to encourage. Punishing a Labrador Retriever for not doing what you want won't be successful; they will likely just ignore you and potentially become fearful of you. Use lots of treats and verbal praise when they do what you want, and don't forget to show them lots of affection and love.
