Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are energetic and incredibly smart dogs that make wonderful family pets! Fun facts about them include that they are the most popular breed of dogs in the United States for the last 26 years! They were originally bred to help fishermen in the Canadian province of Newfoundland, and are great swimmers. They have an extra set of eyelashes to help protect their eyes from water and debris. They also have an incredible sense of smell, and can be trained to help out in search and rescue efforts and other work.
Labrador Retrievers, like all breeds, shed at one time or another. Although they have a reputation for being a low-shedding breed, they are far from being non-shedding. Generally speaking, an adult Lab will shed year-round, though the main shedding period occurs during the summer. To reduce the amount of shedding, it's important to brush your Lab regularly and maintain a healthy diet and exercise schedule. In addition, use a good quality dog shampoo and conditioner made specifically for Labs to help properly nourish their coat and skin.
Labrador Retrievers should not be fed onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, chocolate, candy, fatty table scraps, alcohol, caffeinated food or drinks, or any other type of human food. These items can be toxic to Labradors and cause vomiting, diarrhea, internal damage, and other forms of illness and distress. Labradors should receive wholesome, nutritionally balanced kibble formulated specifically for their breed and size. They should also receive healthy snacks like veggies, small pieces of cooked lean meat, and well-cooked grains.
Before getting a Labrador Retriever, there are a few essential items you should purchase. This includes food, bowls, a collar and leash, a comfortable doggy bed, appropriate toys, and plenty of treats. Additionally, you will need to plan for necessary vet visits and vaccine and health checkups, as well as flea and heartworm prevention pills. You will also need some grooming accessories such as a brush, a comb, shampoo, and nail clippers. These items are important to keep your Labrador Retriever healthy and happy.
Labradors tend to vary in size, but generally speaking, they reach a height of 22 to 24 inches at the shoulder and can weigh anywhere between 55 and 80 pounds. As one of the larger breeds of dog, Labradors can range from smaller, 'standard' size to a much larger 'giant' and 'Giant' size, with some Labs weighing as much as 90-120 lbs. However, a healthy and properly exercised Lab can stay active and lean and remain within these size ranges.
Labrador Retrievers are often referred to as active and energetic dogs. They love to play and join in on family activities. Labs need plenty of exercise to stay healthy, such as regular walks and trips to the park. Their intelligence also requires mental stimulation, which can include playing fetch or training for dog sports. Labrador Retrievers often excel in agility, obedience competitions, and more. With such an active lifestyle, Labradors are better suited to a home where their owners are ready to provide vigorous exercise and mental stimulation.
It is often said that Labrador Retrievers are an ideal choice for first-time owners. With their friendly, outgoing personalities, Labradors can make a good choice for novice dog guardians. They are often eager to please, which means they can respond well to commands and make training fairly simple. Labradors can also be very gentle and affectionate, making them great companions. It is important to note, however, that they require a significant amount of exercise and their energy levels can be higher than other breeds.
Labrador Retrievers, also affectionately known as Labs, are highly intelligent and trainable. Their intelligence and curiosity have earned them the title of "America's favorite dog" and they are consistently ranked among the top five most popular breeds of dogs in the U.S. Not only are Labs one of the brightest dog breeds, they are also extremely friendly, making them a great addition to any family. They are loyal, enthusiastic, and eager to please which adds to their appeal as smart, family companions.
