They were originally bred in Newfoundland as fishermen's helpers and were known as the St. John's Water Dogs. They are an intelligent breed with a reputation for being friendly and loyal, with an outgoing and sweet temperament. Labradors are born to swim and are one of the few breeds originally bred for retrieving waterfowl.
The Labrador Retriever is known for its beautiful, thick coat. Its short double coat consists of a soft undercoat and a slightly coarser outer coat that comes in a variety of colors, including black, yellow, chocolate, and silver or gray. The texture of the coat can vary from sleek and silky to wavy and coarse. It also has an oily outer coating that helps repels water, keeping the inner layer dry and insulated.
Labrador Retrievers should not be fed things like chocolate, grapes, onions, garlic, or any other human foods that may contain ingredients that are toxic to dogs.
