Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers belong to the Sporting Group of dogs, which is defined by the American Kennel Club as consisting of "pointers, setters, retrievers, spaniels, and other breeds used for hunting game birds." Labrador Retrievers are descended from St. John's water dogs, first bred for helping fishermen in the St. John's, Newfoundland area to retrieve nets and catch game. Labradors have a natural love for the water, making them ideal for retrieving small game like birds and waterfowl.
Labrador Retrievers are not considered hypoallergenic, though they may be tolerated by allergy sufferers in some cases. To be considered hypoallergenic, a breed would need to have a low level of dander (dead skin cells shed by the animal), and no saliva or urine that causes allergic reactions. Labradors generally produce low levels of dander, but saliva and urine do contain proteins and glycoproteins that can cause reactions in people with allergies.
When it comes to feeding your Labrador Retriever, there are a few general tips to keep in mind. It's important to select a nutritionally balanced, high-quality diet for your dog, rather than opt for generic brands or nonathorized mixtures. Different life stages will require adjustments to the type and amount of food your Labrador should eat. Puppies should consume two to three meals a day to ensure they're getting enough calories and nutrients to foster growth.
Preparing your home for a new Labrador Retriever can be a fun and exciting project. To start, make sure your home is safe for your pup by performing a “puppy proofing” inspection. Make sure all small objects are out of reach, cords are tucked away and all hazardous materials are stored securely. Consider purchasing brushes, shampoos, and nail clippers to keep your pup groomed. You should also purchase sturdy, chew-proof toys for your pup to play with and a comfortable waterproof bed.
Labradors are classified as medium-sized dogs, but they can seem quite large. Their average height is between 21.5 24.5 inches, giving them a towering appearance. They are also heavier than other breeds of the same size, weighing between 55 80 lbs. As such, they have been known as "gentle giants." They may not be as large as some giant breeds, but they definitely qualify as a big dog.
Generally, adult Labrador Retrievers need at least thirty minutes of walking every day. In addition, it is a good idea to provide an outlet for your pup's energy with mental and physical stimulation in addition to the daily walk. This includes playing fetch, taking your pup to the dog park, providing activities like obedience or agility classes, etc. Exercising your Lab should be fun and not too strenuous, so mix up the types of activities you include and plan to increase their intensity over time. Remember to make the time spent with your pup enjoyable and don't overdo it.
Labrador Retrievers are generally considered to be great family pets, as their gentle, caring nature makes them an ideal companion for children. They have an innate ability to understand and respond to a child's needs and are smart enough to stay out of trouble when left unsupervised. They thrive on an abundance of physical affection and possess a high energy level that will make them excellent playmates. Labrador Retrievers are also very intelligent and trainable, making them easy to teach new commands and tricks.
Training a Labrador Retriever is not necessarily easy but with consistency and dedication it can be done. It helps to understand the breed and what motivates it. Labradors are known to be eager to please and love interaction with humans. They are also very intelligent and learn quickly. It's important to understand labrador temperament in order to train them effectively. Positive reinforcement with treats or play is a great way to show your dog that you approve of his good behavior. Patience and understanding is key when it comes to Labradors.
