Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are energetic working dogs that originated from the St. John's Water Dog, a breed retrieved from the cold North Atlantic waters off the coast of Newfoundland. These intelligent and even-tempered dogs are popular family pets known for being loyal and obedient, as well as excel in a variety of tasks. Labs need plenty of activity, have thick fur with oily, water-resistant undercoating, and come in three classic colors black, yellow, and chocolate.
You can manage allergies with Labrador Retrievers by making sure to brush their hair regularly. This reduces the amount of shedding they do, helping to reduce the amount of allergens in your home. Additionally, wash their bedding in hot water frequently and vacuum your carpets regularly. Change your air filters as needed to ensure they are capturing pet hair and dander. To further reduce your allergic reactions, keep their food stored away properly and always clean any surfaces they have slept on before you sit down. Lastly, make sure any visitors to your home also do not have allergic reactions.
Labrador Retrievers do have some unique dietary needs compared to other breeds. Generally, Labs will require more protein in their diets as they are an active breed. Additionally, Labs need larger amounts of core minerals such as phosphorus and calcium in order to help them build and maintain healthy bones and joints. For Lab puppies, extra DHA and other fatty acids should be included in the diet to support optimal brain and eye development.
The best way to prepare for your new Labrador Retriever is to purchase all the necessary supplies. You should have a dog bed, collar, leash, toy, food, water dishes, food, treats, and a grooming brush. You should also research and get familiar with the breed so you know how to best care for your new pooch. Additionally, you should begin training your Labrador Retriever. A professional trainer may be able to help if you’re feeling overwhelmed.
Labrador Retrievers are a large breed of dog, and should fully mature between 55-80 pounds. Males are typically larger than females, and on average will reach between 21.5 and 24.5 inches tall at the shoulder. An adult Lab should weigh in at just over the 55-pound minimum and should rarely exceed 80 pounds. However, the size of a Labrador will vary slightly depending on the lineage of the dog. Labs of the show/working lineage generally tend to be larger than those from the field/pet lineage.
Labrador Retrievers are a highly energetic breed, which means they need plenty of exercise to help keep them mentally and physically fit. How much exercise they need will depend on the age and size of the Lab; for instance, a younger, bigger Lab may need more strenuous activity than an older, smaller Lab. Generally speaking, a healthy adult Labrador should participate in at least an hour of moderate exercise per day, including lots of walks and playtime.
Labrador Retrievers are an excellent option for first-time owners due to their sweet and loyal nature. Labradors are highly intelligent and respond well to training and discipline. They are also very sociable dogs and enjoy interacting with their families and other people. Labradors are a relatively low maintenance breed and require only basic grooming, food, water and exercise. They generally need only one walk a day and will remain fairly active indoors. Labradors are also known for their unwavering loyalty and protective nature, making them a great companion to not only first-time owners, but any family.
Labrador Retrievers are considered intelligent dogs and are well-known for their obedience, quick learning, social skills and strong desire to please their owners. Labradors have been active participants in many lifestyle, service and military operations for decades, so it is no surprise why they have earned the reputation for being one of the most reliable and loyal companion dogs. Labradors are highly trainable, very adaptive, and eager to learn new commands and behaviors; they easily understand human commands and body language. In fact, Labradors have frequently achieved the highest levels in obedience and agility competitions.
