Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are loyal, people-friendly dogs that are members of the Sporting Group. This breed is highly intelligent, athletic, and obedient, making them excellent choice for many different dog-owners, including hunters, police officers, and family homes. They have a balanced temperament, make great family pets, and can excel in many activities, including agility, flyball, and search-and-rescue. Known for their energy and tenacity, Labradors have a thick coat that comes in three colors: black, yellow, and chocolate.
Although Labrador Retrievers have been known to be hypoallergenic, this does not guarantee that everyone will not be affected by allergies. Allergies to dogs vary from person to person and depend on a variety of factors. Some possible allergens come from their saliva, skin, and/or even hair. It is best to consult an allergist and take a skin test to assess your risk of being allergic to a Labrador Retriever. In many cases, allergies can be controlled and managed with proper medication.
A Labrador Retriever needs a balanced diet of quality proteins, healthy fats, fiber-rich carbohydrates, and essential vitamins and minerals in order to stay healthy. You should feed them a commercially prepared dog food specifically designed for the Labrador's needs, such as one that meets the nutritional guidelines of the American Animal Hospital Association or the Association of American Feed Control Officials. Some healthy, delicious treats to include in your pup's diet could be small bits of lean protein such as cooked chicken, turkey, or salmon; healthy fats like peanut butter, eggs, or coconut oil; and fresh fruits and veggies.
Preparing your home for a new Labrador Retriever is an important process. Make sure your home is a safe and comfortable space for your new pup. Create a designated area for your Lab to retreat to if things become too overwhelming. Secure your home by making sure all electrical cords are hidden away and any dangerous substances are well out of reach. Be prepared for the messier aspects of owning a Labrador Retriever with lint rollers, trash cans, and pet-safe cleaners. Provide your pup with comfortable bedding and enough toys to keep them entertained.
As there is a range of size among Labrador Retrievers, it can be difficult to know exactly how big your puppy will be when fully grown. Generally, males weigh between 65 and 80 pounds, while females weigh between 55 and 70 pounds. However, Labrador Retrievers are considered a large breed, so your puppy could weigh outside of these ranges as an adult. Additionally, Labrador Retrievers can range in height from 22.5 to 24.5 inches at the shoulder when fully grown.
Yes, you can take your Labrador Retriever running. However, keep in mind that it may not be appropriate for your Lab if they are a puppy or do not have a history of running long distances. Before taking an extended run with your Lab, you should make sure they are healthy enough for the physical activity. Be sure to take necessary safety precautions for them by providing a collar and other identifying tags and having them microchipped in case they become lost.
Absolutely! Labrador Retrievers are known for their wonderful personalities, which makes them ideal family dogs. They are incredibly loving and loyal, so they make excellent companions. Labrador Retrievers are smart and very trainable, which makes them easier to train for basic obedience, tricks, and commands. They also enjoy engaging in interactive activities with their family and have an outgoing, non-aggressive, and friendly personality. Their willingness to please makes them great with people of all ages, and their energy will fit in perfectly in households with active families.
The amount of time you need to dedicate to training your Labrador Retriever each day will depend on a variety of factors, such as their age, willingness to learn, and how often they are exposed to training. Generally speaking, it is a good idea to start off slow and invest between 10-15 minutes per session for a few days per week. As your pup begins to learn faster and understand commands better, you can increase the duration of each training session up to 30 minutes. Eventually, as your pup grows, you can aim towards 45-60 minutes worth of training each day.
