Labrador Retrievers are Sporting Dogs, a class of sporting, hunting, water retrieval breeds. These breeds are distinguished by their athletic build, high energy, retrieve instinct, and water-resistant coats. Labs are typically patient, friendly, and eager to please, making them popular family pets and working dogs. They are also popular in agility competitions, as they are quick learners with lots of energy. Furthermore, Labs may excel in many other activities such as scenting, narcotics detection, bomb detection, search and rescue, and other specialized law enforcement.
The Labrador Retriever's coat is a sleek, smooth outer coat of dense, straight, short fur, complimented by a slightly oily undercoat which provides protection from the elements.
