Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds in the United States and for good reason! They have many fun facts associated with them. For example, the breed dates all the way back to the 16th century in Newfoundland, Canada, making them an old breed with many generations of loyal companions. In fact, they love people so much that their nickname is the "velcro dog" because of their desire to stay close to their owners. Labradors are also celebrated for their intelligence they are the most popular breed in the world for service and therapy work.
While Labrador Retrievers generally have low levels of dander compared to other dog breeds, it is possible to suffer from allergies with the presence of a Labrador Retriever. Allergens like hair and dander can be found on these dogs and can trigger allergic reactions. If you are prone to allergies and are considering adding a Labrador Retriever to your home, it is best to consult your doctor or allergist. By having an allergy test done, you can better determine if a Labrador Retriever will be a suitable choice.
Labrador Retrievers should not be fed chocolate, as it can be toxic. Additionally, they shouldn't consume onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, and artificial sweeteners, as these may cause an upset stomach or be toxic in large amounts. Keep in mind that Labs are very food-motivated dogs and may consume food that isn't good for them, so it is important to be careful about what they are given. Foods with a lot of fat, such as cheese and nuts, should not be routinely given either, as too much fat can lead to pancreatitis.
Before welcoming a new Labrador Retriever into your home, you should take some steps to ensure your living space is prepared. Start by making sure they have access to ample exercise and fresh air by providing a fenced-in outdoor space for them to safely play and explore. Stock up on toys and comfy bedding for your pup to rest in, and create an area of your home that is designated just for them. Also be sure to puppy-proof your home by removing any toxic cleaning supplies and plants, as well as any items they may chew on if left unsupervised.
Labrador Retrievers are best known for being loving, loyal companions, but they also come in a variety of size ranges. According to the American Kennel Club, male Labradors can reach a height of 55-67 cm and females can reach a height of 51-62 cm, stacking up to a medium to large size. Depending on their environment, diet, and exercise, an adult Labrador Retriever can weigh up to 36 kg. The lifespan of Labrador Retrievers can be up to 12 years, much of which should be healthy if it is provided with the right conditions.
Labrador Retrievers need daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay healthy and happy. Exercise can be a long walk, an opportunity to run and play, or both. Depending on the age and physical abilities of your Lab, you should aim for at least 30-60 minutes of moderate activity per day (which can be split into multiple shorter sessions throughout the day). Increasing the intensity of exercise gradually is the best way to improve strength, endurance, and agility without over-exerting your pup. As with any breed, start slowly, and consider any underlying health issues when drawing up an exercise plan.
Labrador Retrievers are an excellent breed to consider for a family pet. They are known to be intelligent, loyal, and kind-natured, making them an ideal companion for children and adults alike. They are also known for being outgoing and energetic, so they make great exercise partners. With proper training, they are great at obedience skills, willing to please, and make an ideal guard dog. In addition, they are easy to groom, shedding a moderate amount and relatively easy to keep clean. All of these qualities make Labrador Retrievers a great choice for a family pet.
Training your Labrador Retriever is an important part of your life together and should begin early. Establishing an understanding of what behavior is expected from the pup is essential. Start off with basic commands such as "sit", "stay" and "come". Building on those commands, you can affect the desired change by rewarding them for good behavior while also promptly correcting undesired behavior. These techniques can be further supplemented by involving them in activities such as agility training or obedience competitions.
