Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are an incredibly popular breed of dog known for their intelligence, playfulness, and loyalty. They are also an extremely versatile breed, and are commonly used for hunting, search and rescue, and narcotics detection. Labradors are also highly trainable and excel in obedience and agility sports. When considering a Labrador, it's important to keep in mind that this breed is full of energy and requires plenty of exercise and stimulation. They are also very active and can be extremely destructive if kept locked up in a house or apartment all day.
Labrador Retrievers are not considered to be a non-shedding breed; however, they are a moderate-shedding breed. Labs are known to shed their coats seasonally, releasing the winter coat to make room for the summer coat, as well as everyday shedding throughout the year. By brushing their coats regularly and making sure they're getting the proper nutrition, their shedding can be kept to a minimum. It's also important for owners to vacuum their home regularly to prevent an accumulation of fur, which can be especially problematic in homes with those who suffer from allergies.
Labrador Retrievers are voracious eaters, but you shouldn't feed them just about anything. Chocolate, as it contains a toxic chemical known as theobromine, can cause severe health issues for Labradors, ranging from vomiting and diarrhea to more serious conditions like seizures and cardiac failure. Additionally, Labradors should also not be fed fruits or vegetables with seeds like grapes, cherries, and tomatoes as these could cause an obstruction in their digestive system. Avocado for instance, contains Persin, a toxin that is dangerous for Labradors.
Though Labradors Retrievers are popular family dogs and have a pleasant disposition, they do have some specific requirements to ensure their health and well-being. As they are an active breed, Labs need regular, daily exercise that includes plenty of time off-leash to truly stretch their legs. Additionally, Labradors are sensitive to hot temperatures so it's important to keep them cool with regular swims and plenty of shade in the summer months. Additionally, their thick coats require regular brushing and clipping to keep them from becoming matted.
Labrador Retrievers are not generally considered small dogs. They typically range in height from 22.5 inches to 24.5 inches at the shoulder. Adult Labradors typically weigh 55 pounds to 80 pounds. Even though some of these dimensions may put them in the medium size range for dogs, Labradors are still very much considered a large breed. They have been owners' favorites for generations for their gentle nature, intelligence, and trustworthiness.
Labrador Retrievers generally enjoy swimming as it is a breed-specific trait. In fact, the origin of the Labrador Retriever was their use as a water fowl retrieval dog, which means they enjoy the water and swimming. Swimming can help these dogs to cool down on hot days, and can provide mental stimulation for them. Labrador Retrievers can develop a true love for the water that often leads to jumping right in or even fetching objects from the water.
Labrador Retrievers are a great choice for first-time owners, due to their enthusiasm, intelligence, and sweet temperaments. They are easy to train, making them easy to teach basic commands and commands as complex as agility courses. They also have an incredible bond with their owners, never becoming aggressive or hostile, and are eager to please and be praised. As long as regular exercise and mental stimulation are provided, Labs tend to be well behaved and gentle. Furthermore, Labradors have an even temperament and are loyal and compassionate companions.
Training a Labrador Retriever is quite straightforward. First, decide on the basic commands you want to train him to obey and keep that list of commands consistent. Then, it's important to make sure your Labrador is regularly exercised each day. Afterward, start teaching using positive reinforcement. Give verbal cues and praise with a treat when he responds correctly. If he responds incorrectly, don't provide the reward and repeat the command. Repeat this step until your Lab is able to reliably perform each of your commands. Finally, regular practice is essential to maintain obedience and to keep reinforcing the positive behaviors.
