Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are classified as sporting dogs, a subclass of the hound group. This type is known for their speed, agility, and endurance; they are bred for work and competency in the field. Originating from Newfoundland, this type of dog is known for their intelligence, loyalty, and friendly disposition. Labs are often used as helpmates and companions, and have been popular since the 1800's. Those who own these dogs often do so for work purposes, such as search and rescue, as well as for recreation, such as agility and field competitions.
The Labrador Retriever has a double coat that consists of a short, dense, water-resistant under layer and an outer layer made up of long guard hairs that give the coat most of its color. They come in solid colors such as black, yellow, and chocolate, or brownish-yellow, as well as combinations of black, white, and tan. Their coat is generally thick enough to protect them from cold and wet weather, but not so thick as to make them incredibly susceptible to heat. They have a well-insulated undercoat to keep them warm and they shed seasonally.
Labrador Retrievers can thrive on a great variety of foods. Dry kibble formulated specifically for large-breed dogs, such as Labradors, is the most recommended for optimal health. Quality kibble contains the necessary ingredients and nutrients necessary to keep the Lab at optimal health. Natural sources of food, like fresh vegetables, fruits, raw bones, fish, and cooked lean meats, are also essential for a healthy, balanced diet. They should also have access to fresh, clean water at all times to remain hydrated and healthy.
To ensure your new Labrador Retriever is prepared to join your household, you should first examine your home to make sure it is puppy (or pet) ready. This should include cleaning any hazardous materials, such as medications and chemicals, out of reach; checking that all cords, wires, and curtains are secured or moved out of reach; and stocking up on puppy-safe toys, food, and bedding. You should also look into obedience training classes or hiring a trainer to help you get started.
Labrador Retrievers are a medium-sized breed, and their adult size typically falls into the range of 22-24 inches tall when measured from the shoulder, and 55-80 pounds (25-36 kilograms) when measured in weight. Adult Labradors that have not been purposefully bred to be "miniature" may exceed these measurements. On average, larger males may reach 24-26 inches tall and weigh between 65-90 pounds. Regardless of size, Labrador Retrievers are known for their intelligence and loving nature, making them a great companion for many families around the world.
Labrador Retrievers require regular exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Generally, it is recommended that Labrador Retrievers receive approximately 60 minutes of exercise a day though this should be broken up into multiple sessions. This allows them to get mental stimulation as well as time to play and be social. The kind of exercise should be age-appropriate and should include both physical activity such as walking, running, and playing fetch, as well as mental activities such as puzzle games and agility courses.
Labrador Retrievers are typically known for their friendly and gentle nature, making them an ideal family pet. They are particularly good with kids, and often the two can become instant friends. Labradors have lots of energy which makes them great running and playing partners for children. As a breed, Labradors have a gentle and understanding nature which allows them to interact well with young people and understand their emotions. Furthermore, being intelligent, loyal, and sociable, Labradors get along great with other family members and make for a loving addition to any household.
Training a Labrador Retriever can be both a rewarding and challenging experience. The Lab is an intelligent, eager-to-please breed, so it can be relatively easy to teach basic obedience commands. However, Labrador Retrievers also have a knack for getting into mischief, so it is important to understand their tendencies and be consistent in your training efforts. Patience and positive reinforcement are key in any dog-training program, so be sure to provide plenty of both to build a strong bond with your Lab and see successful results.
