Questions & Answers
Labrador Retrievers are a popular breed of dog amongst dog-lovers, known for their intelligence, loyalty, and vibrant personalities. Labrador Retrievers were originally bred as working dogs, originally used in the fishing industry and later for retrieving animals for hunters and other activities. They tend to be active dogs and love to exercise and spend time outdoors, making them a perfect companion for active individuals or families. When trained properly, Labradors are some of the most obedient and well-behaved dogs around; they really are a people-pleaser.
Labradors are not considered hypoallergenic. They are considered "low-shedding", meaning they shed less than other breeds; however, they don't completely eliminate dander or allergens. Since no dog is truly hypoallergenic, some people with allergies may still experience a reaction when near a Lab. To help reduce allergens in a home with a Lab, it is important to brush them regularly and vacuum their sleeping areas, as well as regularly washing their bedding.
When it comes to Labrador Retrievers, owners should avoid feeding them some types of food. Foods such as chocolate, onions, or grapes can be toxic to Labs and can cause serious health issues. Other human foods such as nut products, dark-colored sodas, bread crusts, sweeteners, and raw meats & eggs can cause digestive problems and should be avoided. Too many treats can also lead to nutritional imbalances, obesity, and other health conditions. Owners should always stick to a high-quality, balanced, age-specific dog food that meets their Lab's nutritional requirements.
When you're getting a Labrador Retriever, there are some must-haves you'll need. Start with a comfortable crate of the right size, such as a 36-inch wire dog crate if your lab is an adult. You'll also need a sturdy but comfortable place for your lab to stay while you're away at work, such as a plastic kennel for outdoor use. You also need to purchase some high-quality food, a food and water bowl, treats, a collar and leash, puppy pads, toys, grooming supplies, and a bed.
The size of your Labrador Retriever puppy will depend heavily on the puppy's parents. Generally, adult Labradors range from 55 to 80 pounds, reaching 24–25" tall at the shoulder. Due to their inherited traits, male Labradors typically grow larger and heavier than females. To get an idea of how big your Labrador pup could grow, look at the parents' size. However, it can be difficult to predict the size of your Lab puppy since puppies grow at different rates throughout the growing process.
Labrador Retrievers absolutely love swimming! As a breed, they excel in water activities and make excellent swimmers due to their muscular build and thick, water-resistant coat. Whether it’s in a pool, lake or other body of water, Labs enjoy taking a dip and usually can't resist a chance to go for a swim. Labradors are also natural retrievers, making them ideal for retrieving fallen items in the water. Not only do they enjoy swimming and fetching, but they also get a great workout and build up their muscles and stamina from water exercise.
Labrador Retrievers are an excellent choice for first-time owners. They are highly intelligent and outgoing dogs, eager to learn and please their owners. They are known for their exceptional loyalty and companionship and are generally very nice to get along with. They make great family dogs, with an even temper and endless love to give. They are naturally eager to please and have very few behavior problems. Labrador Retrievers do best when trained with positive reinforcement, praise and treats.
Labrador Retrievers are widely regarded as one of the smartest breeds of dog. They are consistently ranked among the top three in the Dog Intelligence rankings, making them an excellent choice for those who desire an intelligent canine companion. Their natural intelligence and eagerness to please their owners makes them easy to train and handle. Labradors can quickly learn to fetch, sit, remain, and even roll over with the right motivation and instruction. They are a great breed for learning obedience and agility activities, as well as any potential tricks or creative activities.
